In case it's not clear enough, why did you expect your purchase to be perfect?  Those "other threads" on this topic that you mentioned previously should have alerted you that there is a problem, but then again there seems to be a problem with EVERYTHING these days.

The answer may be to buy nothing.  Don't buy anything and you won't be disappointed.

If you want perfection you're in the wrong hobby.  Many, many, many people complain about it and get nowhere.

The customary response to perceived poor quality is "But I have a right to expect perfection", which may be true, but it will get you very little satisfaction today in this hobby of ours.

Mike

Since when has there been a known problem with Cab-1L/Base-1L sets?  I don't think the average hobbyist should be expected to tinker with the Legacy electronics - if they did it would very likely result in disaster.

Gee Mike, maybe time to chill a little.  I don't think all this hostility is warranted.

I tried to search for it, couldn't find it (of course) but....

I "thought"there was an issue with the first release of the Cab 1L which required it to be sent to back Lionel .

I also "thought" it was a communication issue with the base.

Maybe someone knows/ recalls. Otherwise I'm mistaken.

(In which case I'll delete this post to avoid confusion)

Alot of problems get discussed on this forum, hard to keep track.

If I am at all correct. Maybe the o.p. picked up an older stock cab1l set.

@trnluvr,

Yeah, I made sure of that after the first hour or so of trying, but thanks.  That is a sometimes overlooked problem.  I too have had brand new batteries that were dead.

@RickO,

I do a huge amount of searching on these forums, and I remember something about that too.  That was a while back, and I haven't seen it during my recent searches on this problem.  I don't know if it's older stock, but it was the last one that the 'Central Coast Trains' hobby shop in Atascadero, CA had.  The owner said that it had never been opened when she sent it to me.

In summary, the units failed the very first, basic test, nothing high level.  There were no electromechanical parts involved (except for the push buttons) like in a milk car or icing station.  I've been around long enough to know that those things might need some work even fresh from the factory before they'll work.  This problem was just plain, simply circuitry.  I'll say it again, disappointing.
