Recently obtained the Lionel 7-12012 Boston Red Sox Major League Baseball Berkshire Steam "ready to Run" set. This is the only conventional engine in my set up currently. Can the engine in this set be converted to run like TMCC or Legacy - and not conventional mode? If so what would be the best approach to do this?

Sure, virtually anything can be converted to command. You can do it using the ERR TMCC components or if you're ambitious and don't mind making a bunch of cables, you could consider doing a Legacy upgrade.
Thank you John! I am new to this so learning from the experts here on the forum
Do you know which ERR components I should be looking at for this specific engine? I would also be open to doing the Legacy upgrade. Are there forum posts that you can recommend that i can read through to know how to do this?
You could use the Cruise Commander and Railsounds Commander from 3rd Rail (These are TMCC not Legacy). Bear in mind that these will cost $160 and $130, respectively which is equal to the cost of your entire set.

Well, unless you're willing to do considerable work upfront, the Legacy upgrade might be a bridge too far, you have to develop your own wiring, not to mention understanding all the tradeoffs. I'm not sure for a first project that would be a good idea. I think for a first timer that the ERR stuff is the way to go, it's well understood and pretty simple.
