Hi all,

Wanted to pick your minds as to what crossing gate I should invest in. My 3 year-old nephew is addicted. I gave him an old crayola set for Christmas... he has played with it non-stop.

He loves crossing gates.  His birthday is coming up and I'm not sure which to go for. He can be sort of rough at times, so I don't want to buy the $150 lionel fast track ones. A bell would be nice ( at least my sister thinks so currently ).

What ones do you recommend (lionel, bachmann, MTh, connerstone)?

Which ones can you repair/get parts for easily?

What other odds and ends will be needed? I haven't gotten into wiring accessories. No doubt an activation track will be needed.

Thanks!!!

It is gigantic, but a 252 or 262 is pretty rugged and nearly bulletproof (and cheap). It does not have a bell. The 252 lluminates the gate, but does not have red lights or crossbuck. The 262 has the red lights and crossbuck but has to be modified to illuminate the gate. The 262 lights do not blink, just illuminate when the gate decends. Just about every part is available for these or their modern copies.

You would need a push button, insulated rail, infrared activator or 145C contactor to activate. I would use the push button so your nephew can activate it when he wants. It is more interactive.

I like the Lionel unit it is simple to hook up and they a readily available at any hobby shop or train show if one is near by.

As for the activation, the automatic trigger via a track section is cool  but if you wire the control ground loop through a normally open push button your nephew will probably get a kick out of being in control of the action.

The gateman is a great accessory, I still enjoy watching it in all it's simplicity.
