I am between layouts. On my previous layout I used a SER2, DZ Data Driver and a "blue data wire bus" to throw my switches with the LCS app on my ipad. This worked fine except for the fact that the ipad did not display the "correct" position of the switches. This was before the release of the CSM2 and the only work around I could come up with was to program a route in which all switches were through. For the duration of that operating session the ipad would correctly indicate the switches positions.

I will have a 40 switches on my new layout and I don't need to "see" the position of the switches on my ipad for all of them. Here are my questions...

1. The CSM2 manual never mentions the use of the DZ2001 Data Wire Driver. If I were to have all of my switches connected to CSM2 would I then not need the Data Drive Wire and a SER2?

2 Can I run one data bus wire for all DZ2500s if some are connected in groups of 7 to a CSM2 and some are not? Those not connected to CSM2s would be wired directly to the bus wire which would come from the white wire on the DZ001 Data Wire Driver connected to a SER2.

I just want to make sure that the DZ2001 Data Wire Driver & SER2 would not cause a problem for the CSM2s.

Thanks very much!

The DZ-2001 works fine with the CSM2 boxes.  In truth, trying to use the serial data out of the CSM2 with the DZ-2500 is problematic, that's how I was first wired.  Every three or four times I powered up the layout, all the DZ-2500 switch machines would be frozen, no operation in command, and now even pushing the button on the switch machine!  If the switch machines didn't lock up, then all was well for that operating session until another complete power cycle.

I went back to using the DZ-2001 for all the serial data and the CSM2 for sensing, no sweat, and no more lockups.

I'm pretty sure I know what is happening and how to fix it, but I haven't gotten around to it.  I believe delaying the power up of the DZ-2500's for a couple of seconds to allow the CSM2 boxes to get their mind right will allow me to use that serial data.  However, since the DZ-20001 is working fine with them, it's not a priority.

To elicit silly questions like this!

OK, the CSM2 is the link from the DZ-2500 switch machine position indication and the LCS display on the iPad.  It shows you the actual position of the switch machine no matter what caused it to switch, TMCC, push-button, non-derailing, etc.

Uh, given your own confusion and wasted time using this device, maybe it's not such a silly question.

I was always taught (and have taught myself) that the only really stupid question is the one not asked.

John, I must have something hooked up incorrectly. If a  switch is triggered by hand it doesn’t show any change on the ipad. I have the CMS2 wired with the blue data wire hooked up. I am also experiencing the same trouble with the switches not always working when I power up.

Try the DZ-2001, I suspect that will fix the switches not working on power-up.  I know it was the "silver bullet" for me.

The only thing that jumps out is the fact that the CSM2 needs time to initialize the serial data.  Obviously, before it is fully powered up and initialized, something comes out the serial port that the DZ-2500 doesn't like.  I don't know what "mode" the DZ-2500 is in at that point, but it's DEAD with the lights on, but no response to any outside signals.  Since that doesn't happen with the DZ-2001, I have to believe it's something coming out of the CSM2 before the microprocessor is initialized.
