I bought a new MTH 30-20248-1 NYC RS1 at York. It runs great and everything has been working fine except the smoke volume was inconsistent at first and then very poor after that. The heating element was working as was the fan. I would put more smoke fluid into the stack without any improvement. I took the shell off to "explore" and found the problem. There was no fluid in the smoke unit. On the inside of the shell under the stack is a plastic catch basin type device that is supposed to collect the smoke fluid that is put into the stack and channel it over to the filler on the smoke unit. Problem is that there is no gasket to seal off this basin/diverter. The fluid put into the stack would not get into the smoke unit. What little smoke being produced would leak inside the shell and not get to the stack. Once I fashioned a gasket with some instant gasket material from the Auto Zone, the RS1 has become a terrific smoker.

If anyone is having a similar problem, this is all easily visualized by taking the shell off. My Premier V 1000 swither had a similar problem and fix. Hope this helps if anyone is having the same issue.

I had a similar problem a while back with a RK Scale RS3, Interstate, #30-20215-1. I had a gasket that was out of alignment as was the smoke funnel going down to the smoke unit in the engine. There was an offset in the funnel in order to line up with the smoke unit. Smoke fluid was leaking out of the engine and the misalignment was the reason.

I like your idea of the gasket material from Auto Zone, might just give that a try on mine as the original gasket was all scrunched up and I couldn't get a new one. I straightened it out and reused it, but not sure it is as aligned as it could be.

I can really see how this could easily get misaligned during assembly, even if the assembler was being careful. You can not see anything inside while putting the shell back on and any movement to align the shell could easily get something misaligned.
