I just picked up a DCS Remote Commander for a 10 wheeler locomotive I have. It will not start up the locomotive as it should. The locomotive is set to ID #1. I did a factory reset with the Z4000 transformer. I still get no response from the locomotive. I do not have the hand held full DCS hand held unit. I do have a TIU. If the factory reset done with the Z4000 didn't work is there anyway to do a reset with the TIU and the software on my PC? I thought reloading the sound file might reset the locomotive, is the correct?

Is this a 3 volt PS2 locomotive? According to the Remote Commander Users Manual, PS2 locomotives must be 3 volt, not 5 volt.
The DCS Remote Commander needs a locos address to be raw ZERO. The only way to achieve this is to do a factory reset of the loco with the DCS system
Matt That is the answering I was looking for. I guess this will continue to run conventional as I can't see dropping 200.00 to reprogram 1 locomotive. I would also have to drive nearly an hour for a shop to do it and they charge close to 50.00 to reset it so that is not happening.
Brad,
The locomotive is set to ID #1. I did a factory reset with the Z4000 transformer.
How do you know this? If it's because you reset it with the Z4000, that's not the case.
First, there is no such thing as a DCS ID# of "0", or "raw 0". All DCS engines, PS2 or PS3, come from the factrory with an engine ID# of "1".
Second, when a DCS engine is added to the DCS Remote, it is assigned a different engine ID#, which is always one greater than it's DCS ID#.
Third, while some PS3 engines, with later firmware, are able to be Factory Reset from the DCS Remote Commander, PS2 engines may only be reset with either a DCS TIU and remote combination, or a DCS Commander unit.
This is all explained in The DCS Companion 3rd Edition, on page 229, in Appendix E: The Truth About DCS Engine ID Numbers.

WOW! I do that for free, $50 for two minutes work is a bit steep! Obviously, they don't want your business!
I assigned it ID#1 with the DCS base unit and it has never been programmed with the TIU and hand held unit but it still doesn't respond. I tried doing the reset in the manual but it still doesn't work.
I do it for free too and I do upgrades for free as well. My mistake Barry, I could have sworn it was zero but its been a couple years since I messed with one of those commanders

As I said, when you made it DCS ID #1 (however you did that isn't exactly clear), you made theengine ID #2 and it then became unable to operate using the DCS Remote Commander. The DCS Remote Commander requires an engine to have engine ID # 1.
I tried doing the reset in the manual but it still doesn't work.
The transformer reset in the engine's manual is not a Factory Reset, rather, it's similar (though not identical) to a DCS Feature Reset.

Yes close to 50.00 and that combines with an almost 1 hour commute each way isn't worth it. I had a handheld unit a few years ago and I know that it only takes a minute or two to reset an engine. This is one of the main reasons I went over to Legacy so far 6 sets of locomotives and I have had zero problems programming and running them. I only have one Legacy steamer and Lionel has no 10 wheelers that I am aware of so it may be time to have this converted to TMCC if possible. It cost more than running it to the local shop but it will ensure that this will never happen again.
Lionel has plenty of 10-wheelers, I have one of the earlier Legacy versions, and they just released a later set.
I have this model.
I have the wood burning 10 wheeler which I believe Lionel has never made.
OK, different locomotive.

I think you're beat until you find a dcs remote. The engine needs a factory rest and then left alone...As you already figured it out you can't add the engine to the remote..
I don't pay much attention to engine internal IDs and such . just what shows up on the remote. In this case the engine must be left in reset .
Anyone close with a remote?
Not that I know of unless someone from the Angels Gate High Railers in San Pedro CA are reading this. I am not a member so that may not happen either. The possibility is the shop that charges and is close to an hour away. I like the sound set it has which is the only reason it is not getting the conversion to TMCC. Lionel has a sound set on the Western Union General that would be great but it's not available on a chip.
A Ginormous thanks to Dustin one of our forum members came through and lives close enough I can take the locomotive to his home and get it reset :-). Thanks Dustin!!
