I bought a used (new; never used) MTH DCS off a private person on e-bay.  I have a Lionel Legacy hooked up to a 3 track layout.  I have 3 separate power sources hooked up to 3 TPC 300's all in what is called "daisy".  I purchased all the necessary cables to hook the TIU into the Legacy Base.  (As per diagram that "gunrunner john" posted on Jan. 27, 2013.  (Thank You Very Much for posting this John.)(I sent a message to MTH just before Thanksgiving and still haven't gotten any response from them.)     I just hooked everything up today and nothing is happening!!!  The TIU indicator light is on. I have it powered with a Z-1000 Power Brick.   I have a brand new MTH SD70ACE BNSF PS3 Engine on the track.  With absolutely nothing happening with it at all--it's deader than do-do!!!  I've tried all kinds of ways to program it but get nothing on the remote.  When first turned on the remote lights up with 3.10 Version 2003.  Could this be to old of a program???  If so, how do I go about getting a updated program??  My wife has a laptop and is a computer wiz.  Yes, Barry I have your book.  But me; I'm old school!!!  Takes me a while to digest all this new stuff!!  Many Thanks Guys  TT

First, make sure that the engine's DCS/DCC switch is in the DCS position and that the 2-rail/3-rail switch is in the 3-rail position. If the engine has these switches the engine's manual should tell you where they are.

Next, make sure that the DCS signal is on for all channels: Menu/System/DCS Setup and press soft key "AON"

With the TIU getting power, press READ on the DCS Remote and see if the Remote can find the TIU.

After you've done all that:

  • Put power into Fixed channel In #1, Hot to Red TIU terminal and Common to Black TIU terminal
  • Connect TIU Fixed #1 Out to the track, Red terminal to center rail and Black terminal to an outside rail
  • Make sure there's power on the rails
  • Press: Menu/System/Engine Setup/Add Engine/Add MTH Engine
  • If the engine is found, press STARTUP.

DCS 3.10 should work fine with PS3 engines.

Many people buy these new and never read the book and end up dumping them on ebay.  Do what Barry stated and you should be good to go.  If that does not work, open the engine up and very carefully pull the 40 pin plug from the board.  Pry each end of the plug and do not pull the wires.  Put the plug back in and next pull the 8 pin plug and put that back in and see what you have.

One thing that may be help first is to place the engine on the track with out DCS and just use the Z-1000 with the controller.  Power up and wait 30seconds as the PS-3 capacitor charges.  Does the engine start up and work in conventional?

Lets make sure the engine is functioning, at that point we can determine if the TIU works and can the engine accept DCS signal.    G
