Decoding Lionel Part Numbers

I know that lionel part numbers have a meaning behind them. I have some parts that i know they are model specific. I know the number but i don't know what model they fit. For example 6SP8590040 is a DC motor with a flywheel. What i would like to know is the meaning of the part number. I believe when Mike made the database each part number reference something. Does anyone know???
