Am about to receive my 2nd K-Line scale F7 and am curious as to the differences in their production. I gather that there may have been essentially three (?) different phases to them with the early units having the motors in the trucks with both A & B units powered. I believe the first run of B&Os and WPs from the late 1990s were configured this way.
The second group went to vertical motors w/flywheels (in 2000?) like everyone else but retained the outsized 'PW style' plain pilot. I've purchased an ABA set of the handsome NP F7s from 2001 which have the large pilot. The plan is to replace it with a more prototypical for NP 'freight' pilot along with a scale coupler. The 2nd photo below really gives illustration to the term 'Lobster claw'!
Contrast the improved appearance of the third phase diesels with these PRR F7s from the end of production in 2005. K-Line included a scale pilot (shown) and coupler replacement in the box. The locomotive has much added detail (external windshield wipers, side view mirrors, and side window shades) as well, resulting in a beautiful model of these iconic diesels.
The very useful K-Line Legacy site is still pretty sparse with information like this. Please add your knowledge to what I've remembered here. Thanks!
