I was wandering around the Lionel web site and came across an article on building benchwork.

Basically rather than build a conventional table they build a base which looks like a series of low walls made from 2 x 4s.  2x4's horizontally top and bottom with 2 x 4 vertical support on 24 inch centers.  Anyone ever try this method?

An alternate bench framework method.  This method allows for bolting together standard sections in a variety of ways. These sections can be easily dis-assembled and re-arranged.  The frames use standard size 2x4 rails in 3 foot, 4 foot and 6 foot lengths.  The subroadbed (not shown) is attached from below using wood screws.  This allows changes and modifications to be easily made.

 

See photos attached of various "modules" which bolt together using 1/4 inch hex head bolts.
