Is it possible to purchase and upgrade from PS1 to PS2 yourself? I have many Locos with PS1 that have not worked for years even after using the repair chips from the local train shop.

Yes, the upgrade kits usually run around $180, but if you join the MTH club you can get them cheaper.
Second option, you can sell off the non-working engines cheaply here on the forum to people who may be interested in doing the upgrade for themselves and then take the cash and buy something new.
Third option is to go to some of the upgrade artists here on the forum and have them do it for you.
Choose spending money wisely, most Rail King units will not be worth the expense you put in them after you are done. Scale size and premiers might be best options.
And lastly send your PS-1 to someone who can repair them. I haven't met a PS-1 engine that could not be repaired yet. G
mck, here are links to detailed photos of some of my PS2 upgrades .
The step by step instructions with the upgrade kits are excellent. It's very important to Plan Ahead.

That's strange. Are you sure you are using a recommended transformer for PS1 and the proper starting sequence? Are you using a TIU variable channel or just directly off a transformer?
I prefer a BCR over a battery for PS1 engines as you don't have to open it up when it has sat for a time to check to make sure it is fully charged or else it's possible to scramble the board and need resetting.
With the BCR you just power up at 10 volts or more for 1 minute and it's ready to run no matter how long the engine has sat without running. I also recommend using the throttle or thumb wheel of the remote instead of the direction button as I think it is easier on the PS1 electronics.
