Passenger/Baggage Caboose, Rebuilt by CRI&P, August 1940

Western Pacific 657 composite bay caboose converted in 1943 from a 1916 era Pullman Standard composite boxcar by the WP Jeffrey shop in Sacramento. It now resides at the Nevada State Railroad Museum at Carson City.
The PRR used the X23 as a basis to fill a shortage of cabooses during WWII. A total of 75 boxcars were converted into NX23 during 1943.
Bob, Yes, it was worth it to get the Dockside!

B & O on the move...
The Western Maryland tunnel under Mt Savage between Frostburg, Md and Deal, Pa.
The WM alignment from Pittsburgh to Cumberland is now the Great Allegheny Passage Rail Trail. Thus you can bicycle from Pittsburgh to Washington DC on scenic rail trail and canal trail(C&O Canal from Cumberland to DC).
Oct 2007 on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.
Excellent photographs of the bike trail and the 734!! Our younger daughter's in-laws rode the whole Allegheny Passage from Pittsburgh to Washington last summer. They had a great time.
That's a bike ride we wanted to do but arthritis caught up with both of us before we got around to it. The ride through the tunnel is interesting because lighting has been installed. They designed and implemented bullet-proof lights knowing the local hooligans would try to shoot them out.

I used to bicycle a lot, but arthritis, bad knee, and now back would keep me from it. My wife hasn't been able to ride a bike for 20 years probably. My daughter's in-laws are 18 and 21 years younger than me, and they have been taking advantage of biking while they are younger. Both have recurring back issues, in fact he just had an operation last week, so I think the longer trips are off for this year.
