One of my favorite rail-related research topics, right in my backyard. I remember seeing the tracks after CSX abandoned the line but never saw a train run. I've walked/run nearly the entire line, which is now a trail. A portion is actually being returned to a railroad as a light rail/commuter line. See Ben Sullivan's excellent website HERE. Prototype photo section is a real winner. IMG_3975IMG_3841IMG_3842IMG_3843IMG_3781IMG_3782IMG_2671

Glad I got to see the B&O Museum's 4-4-0 William Mason operate when I did. Little did we know then, that today, she sits cold in the museum. Recent routine inspection found portion of the firebox too thin for further operation. She has been cosmetically restored and is on static display. The museum hasn't ruled out operating it again, if the $$$ is on hand to properly complete needed work. DSC05039DSC05040DSC05071

At the B&O Museum... The SD40 (?) is in dire need of a paint job, now tucked away in a isolated corner. IMG_0492

The Museum's GP38 #3802 is frequently found operating the short trains up and down the "First Mile". IMG_0500

This MARC F unit is actually a Non-Powered Control Unit - basically a cab car on steroids. It was donated by MARC and was converted from a B&O F7 originally. IMG_0512

GP40 in the front yard, it has held up nicely over the years. It was the first unit ever painted in their very impressive shop complex and paint booth. IMG_0489

Switchers and Speedliners!IMG_0490

In recent years, the B&O Museum has held some Steam Weekends. Unfortunately, all 4 operating locomotives at the museum have come due for their 15 year/1472 teardown and rebuild and none are operable.

Here we see the 1927 built replica "Lafayette" on a photo run-by. The B&O William Mason 4-4-0 (see above), Lafayette, and 1927 B&O Built Replica "Tom Thumb" are all original B&O steamers that have operated at the museum. Their 0-4-0T formerly called St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, Ft. Eustis and Cass Scenic Railroad home before coming to the museum in the 1980s. IMG_0508

Trumptrain,

Awesome trains, awesome photos!  You've chosen great angles to show off your layout.  That actual bridge is amazing.  I didn't catch the caption.  Where is it?

tomlinson Run Railroad

Pretty sure that's the Bollman Truss bridge in Savage, MD.

Thanks your kind words TomlinsonRunRR!!  I try to shoot at angles that depict the trains as we would see them in real life.

Al H. you are correct that is the Bollman Truss bridge in Savage, Md. which stands a block and a half from my house.  It took the B&O across the Little Patuxent River to the Savage, Manufacturing Co. which used to make cotton duck ( canvas ) for tents and the like.  As the B&O ( or CSX ) gave the bridge to the Howard County Dept of Park, the bridge has been freshly painted with the finishing touches being applied this week.  I'll try to get some new photos of it up soon.

I've always liked this one:

And the O Gauge American Flyer version:

Gilbert was remarkably faithful to the prototype.  For us S gaugers, it's a shame they didn't continue this nice looking train.  The locomotive was carried over, but not the cars.  Some of us have taken to custom painting to get what we want.  We're used to it...

B&O 50, McCook, IL, EMD, September, 1972, Electro-Motive Corp. (EMC preceded EMD) model AA (1,800-hp Class DP-1) passenger locomotive. A very historic diesel locomotive, the first passenger road locomotive not articulated to its train. Placed in Royal Blue service (Jersey City - Washington DC.) on 8/22/35, it was transferred to Abraham Lincoln service (Chicago - St. Louis) on B&O subsidiary Alton in 4/36. Following the B&O-Alton breakup, Alton bought it in 5/43. Following WWII, it became GM&O #1200 and served in local freight service and on the Joliet commuter train. It was retired in 1956

Brian - This would be a great model for one of the O scale manufactures to produce/import!   It could be done in both B and O and Alton livery.  I think Santa Fe also had these kind of boxcabs on some of their streamliners as well.

you could start with an MTH doodlebug. Some cutting, filling, filing, sanding and painting could be an interesting project.

From my MTH set 20-2258-1 E6 lead A-unit #57.

Now the set included a prototypically correct number (57X) non-powered B-unit.

IMG_5453

Here the B-unit is half way through mod transferring the "prime movers"  electric motors and geared trucks from the sets not-prototypical trailing A-unit albeit correctly number A-unit 52 that MTH pushed on to us.
