A few weeks ago a lady called and offered to donate her father's trains to our club. It took awhile to link up with here but we made it today. Very nice gal, a pediatrician from Montana whose father was in KY south of Cincinnati. It was a real mish-mash of stuff from an a HO power pack to 5 Aristocraft Large Scale freight cars. A few Lionel pieces , some plasticville, and some nice K-Line items; specifically a Freight Loading accessory w/flatcar, a shanty with brakeman, an operating billboard that's quite heavy, a CSX MP15 switcher and Boxcar. Also included is a beautiful Great Northern EP5 diesel electric that is 1:48th scale w/TMCC, sound, and cruise. It appears almost new and very pretty in the GN scheme. I have the NH version packed away somewhere but have no experience with them operational.

Are the Great Northerns particularly uncommon?  I gather they are late production with the cruise. Don't know if any of the fellas will want this as several of them are 'toy train' guys but it sure is pretty!

Will have to check around and see what it's worth in case we offer it for sale as a fund raiser :-)

Here's the link from the Legacy K-Line Trains website that shows the TMCC version of the EP-5.   K2733-5019CC Great Northern Scale EP-5 (comm w/RS, EC, cruise)

It shows it in green and with road number 5017 but the description matches.

Here's complete Great Northern results from the website.  It show they offered 3 versions.  Great Northern Links

If I remember correctly there was a small issue with the locomotive hitting the Z-Stuff switch machines. I always loved the look of that locomotive.

The EP5 had an outside 3rd rail electrical pickup shoe so that it could operate into Grand Central Terminal using the New York Central's 600 volt electrical system.  K-Line modeled these in the down position which caused them to hit some trackside objects.  The shoes can be easily removed by unscrewing two screws.  NH Joe

Those were run in the Cascade tunnel in Washington State. The only place on the line. The tunnel is 8 miles long.

The New Haven was the only railroad that had EP5 engines.  Only 10 of them were made.  They operated between New Haven, CT and Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station in New York.   The EP5s were equipped to use the New Haven's and PRR's overhead electrical pickup and the New York Central's 3rd rail system into Grand Central Terminal.  NH crews called the EP5s "Jets" because the cooling fans made so much noise.

Lionel painted their EP5s in the NH, Great Northern and Milwaukee paint schemes.  The GN and Milwaukee schemes are fantasy schemes.  K-Line is the only company that made the models with the correct 3 axel trucks.  I have forgotten if they were C-C or A-1-A trucks.  The Lionel model used B-B trucks which was incorrect.

These K-Line models are excellent runners and have beautiful paint.  I have the NH model with TMCC.  I think that anyone would be pleased to own one in any of the offered paint schemes.  I don't know if K-Line did the Milwaukee scheme.  NH Joe

Don't over look the Williams versions either.  They are larger, but I believe they have the correct truck configuration.  Beyond the NH, made many other paint schemes.

Did Penn Central or Conrail ever "own" these before they were retired?
