I have a Lionel FT diesel locomotive (Polar Express 10th Anniversary ) that has little to any tolerance for for clearing adjoining pieces of Fastrack unless perfectly flush. The front coupler plunger(?) hangs very low and whenever the join between Fastrack pieces are even the slightest bit off, the train comes to a slamming halt as the plunger hits the lip of the track. You can see how close it is to the center rail in the photo and also where the paint has come off the plunger from hitting the center rail. Is there a way to adjust the plunger/coupler so it remains more parallel to the surface of the track?
Also, while this is only happening with this particular engine (1 of 10 that I run on the layout), I have noticed that it happens 90% of the time with 1 specific type of track piece - Lionel Fastrack 1 3/8" fitter piece. There are at least 4 spots where this is a problem, and all on flat areas of the layout. You can see with the naked eye where these pieces have varying rail heights that don't always align. All of my other engines just run over the imperfection but they all make a noticeable sound doing so. I'll look for better pieces of the fitter track, but because this also happened going over a switch, I'd like to find a fix for the FT coupler unit first.
