I bought a 1656 switch locomotive and replaced the E unit with a rebuild. Locomotive ran like a champ until recently. I was running it and the locomotive suddenly stopped. I started it up but now it doesn't buzz and only goes in reverse. I took it apart and everything seems to move well. Wires are all still connected. The E unit does not make the familiar buzz sound prior to choosing a direction of travel. Stumped. Any suggestions?

Will the e unit plunger move up and down? If the plunger moves freely then I would suspect that you lost power to the coil. You might want to look at the e unit switch.
The wires to the unit seem to be intact. The plunger moves freely. I Will put on my magnifying headset for a better look at the connections.
The lever that enables/disables directional travel is the top suspect.
The lever is tight against that rivet. There is no play nor is it lose. Although I didn't check if it was rubbing the shell of the locomotive. I will look at that tonight.
Time to break out the meter. See if you have power to the coil of the E-Unit. If you have power, turn off the power and measure the coil resistance. If it's open, that's your problem. I'd also check to see if the plunger moves, does the pawl engage the wheel and turn it to the next position.
