What would cause the smoke unit and chuff sound to all of a sudden go dead on a steamer but the engine still runs under command fine?

First off, the ERR isn't directly involved in the smoke unless you've added the extra chuff control board. That sounds like the chuff switch is the problem.
ERR Boards don't have Triac output to turn smoke on and off?? I would think they would via the R2LC.
I agree, the chuff switch is the first item to check since it controls smoke and chuff. G
The chuff sound quit, that's not the triac.
Since my crystal ball is on the fritz and not knowing what type of engine this is or what type smoke unit it has. I would try a reprogramming.

Maybe you better polish yours, he' has problems with smoke and chuff. 
Well, if the chuff isn't working, he wouldn't be getting much smoke, assuming the smoke unit has chuff control of the fan.
Of course, my crystal ball hasn't worked properly in years, or I'd have already won the lottery and be outta' here!

I don't want to assume anything, I was just thinking he might have a mechanical unit or a 27 ohm fan unit. That is why I said without knowing try a reprogram. I would never think that the chuff stopped working and he might have accidentally turned off smoke with the switch.

John, You need to read slower. The smoke and chuff quit. You stated ERR doesn't control smoke. I beg to differ.

You're right, I was referring to the smoke chuff (if equipped), I realize the R2LC controls the heater (and fan if they have basic continuous smoke).
Bill is really right, we don't know what engine, or what extent ERR stuff is in there. I too assumed a semi smart smoke unit. Even the title may not mean ERR. Just electric rail road issues

Don't bother, the standard issue crystal ball here doesn't work worth a hoot!
I had to send it back to 3rd rail. Scott said a board went bad. Will see tomorrow when ups says is will arrive back from the factory.
