I had several emails over the last couple of months from forum folks asking about my elevated line in the city.  Specifically if I had made any progress....  Well....I have not done a lot this past year with the "EL" as a planned expansion using some sections that I had expected to receive did not occur due to those components not ever arriving.  Regardless, I am going to concentrate over the next weeks and months in finishing the railings and various other details which I need to do.  The pictures below are a review of previous postings with a few new pictures.  My "EL" is certainly not as accurate or as nice as others that have been posted here on the forum but over time I will improve it.  By the way, if I have given you picture overload, please accept my apology....there are a lot of pictures here.  Thanks for looking!!

Alan very nice work. I also like your old cars and the time period they are from. I am sure your time on the layout has been a little bit limited since you have started into your new venture. I always enjoy seeing pictures of your layout and all the supporting features. Thanks again for sharing with us.

Alan, what you feel your layout may lack in finite detail and realism, it certainly more than makes up for in shear size and scale.  I know of none other that give off such impressions as yours from the lighting effect you have worked on to the skyscrapers and variety of architecture an scenery.

Hi Terry....

I am not sure what you are asking....so I hope my answer is helpful:  the entire main part of the structure is made of Sintra, a type of plastic.  It has been cut into the patterns you see via both a laser and CNC machine.  Also, I chose to use black foamcore as the track base between the girders which is not necessary and does vary from the prototype.

Thanks,

Alan

Hi Alan. That EL of yours brings back memories. How long has it been, 3 plus years I think? I have always loved your Electroliner particularly the color scheme, so I finally found one and grabbed it fast as I know they are hard to find. See below a couple photos.

Again..thanks so much guys.  Means a lot when fellow members here take the time to look and comment!!

Mr. Muffin...I will go up to the layout and measure that distance since I don't remember off the top of my head and then I will report back here since this info may be useful to others...

Jim...still so happy that you helped make my "EL" happen....

Steve....

When I was doing my research on elevated lines I found that early on the lattice type was built but rather soon, particularly in NYC, the girder type became the preferred type of structure because it was less expensive and stronger.  I liked the older look of the lattice so that is why I chose that design.  As far as height, I found that going to the NYC subway blogs online yielded a lot of information.  On the west end of the system the average height of the elevated from street level is about 12.6 feet.  The highest station on the system is 88 feet above street level.  The average height is less than 25 feet.  I felt that 30 feet on the model looked too high as it puts the trains above the 3rd floor of buildings and as a matter of fact it made the buildings look smaller.  So I cut the column supports so that the height from street level to the bottom of the side girder is 20 feet and the height to the top of the girder is 26 feet.  This meant that the column supports were cut at 6.5 inches.  I feel that the appearance is better height wise in my particular instance.

Jim made the supports for me but after I received them, I adjusted the height.  He will custom build them according to your needs...

If you need more pictures or closeups, please feel free to let me know.

Alan,  My plan is to lie in wait until the next horrific winter storm is bearing down on Mountain Home and then drop in.  We will be snowed in for a week with nothing to do but run trains and post on OGR.  In all seriousness, I need to drop in and see your catenary. I have two scale GG-1s, two EP-5s and a S-2 on which I need to log some miles under wire. I know you will have some great tips. Regards, Pat B.

Alex...thanks again my Friend!!

Hi Bill...good to hear from you!  I was at first planning on attending the Springfield show but the weather in this part of the country is most likely going to keep me here.  It is two hours one way to the nearest airport and if the long range forecast is correct, the two lane road to Springfield/Branson, Mo. airport will be impossible to travel.  As you may know, on the way to York in October, we hit a deer and totaled one car...can't afford to go off one of these bluffs!!

Guy...thanks so much!

Alan
