Hi Gerry ........ Under track only: 1/2" plywood,1/2" Homasote. Blue Styrofoam under scenery. Bench work framing 2x4 and 1x4.  Plywood shelf half way down on straight sections, no shelf under curves. The shelfs are loaded with a lot of stuff, Tools, hardware, trains, empty boxes, nails, screws, spools of wire, magazines, pretty much a lot of weight. Side curtains fabric painters drop cloth and black landscape fabric. And most important 90% of rolling stock runs on Weaver Delrin trucks and Delrin wheels. I find the third rail pickup rollers contribute most of noise for me. locomotive sound is adjusted so I can hear it when its near me but not on the other side of layout, 36' X 22'.  Also it seems,  fast angle wheels make a lot of noise compared to a flat wheel tread. 2 rail wheels (metal or plastic) are quieter also. So its probably a combination of everything. I still have nails in track.

Hey Joe did I get your attention    My wheels stay clean ! Heck nothing sticks to Delrin, not even paint. Now my old Atlas Pola cars with plastic wheels, thats another story, don't roll real good and they get dirty. but good looking trucks and you can paint them. Weaver wheels and trucks also roll really good.
