I'm back. This time with a different problem, different engine. MY old engine 1666 won't power up. Just stopped. Wiring seems o.k. even tho it's very, very old. Got to be a short somewhere? How to troubleshoot it? Ed

Check the e unit handle to make sure it is making contact. Then check for loose wires, then the brushes. I sometimes give the motor and e unit a shot of CRC QD Contact Cleaner to loosen any grime.
Does the headlight come on?
If the engine is getting power from the track, the headlight should be illuminated.
I'll assume it is Lionel, but Marx also made a 1666. If it is cast, it's Lionel, or plastic if it is Marx.

No. The headlight doesn't go on, either.
Problem solved. I really checked the old wires running out of the e-unit. Seemed one was frayed and right up against the metal unit. Separated it, put some tape around it. And I'm back in business. Ed
now do yourself a favor, and replace each wire one by one.
