I wonder if there is some list that would show what types of engines are compatible in a lash-up. I know that this might be a shot in the dark, but I thought I would ask. The reason is because:

I wanted to run my TMCC U33C (6-28235) with a GP30 (6-28840). But before I do any lash-up, I always do a test by setting up the lash-up, then separate the engine by about 12 to 18 inches to see if they stay within in inch or less at all speeds. The GP30 out ran the U33C, so I assumed they are not compatible. Different gear ratio?

I don't expect to see a detailed list of compatible engines by every Lionel number, it would be uncontrollable to say the least. But I now wonder if the GP30 would be compatible with my GP35's, or GP9's and that the U33C gear ratio is the reason they won't lash up.

I "assumed" that all TMCC and Legacy diesels would lash-up, but apparently not. Then comes the question of steam engines.

Otherwise, I guess the only way to know is to just run tests with ever engine I have and keep notes.

Most of my knowledge is from Legacy and discussions with Jon Z before he left Lionel, and I have not tired it, a Legacy engine in an MU with a TMCC engine. My memory seems to think that the Legacy engine would drop back to TMCC mode to match the TMCC engine.  What I do know is that Lionel used at least 3 Legacy set of speed steps.  within each set, I have not had an issue.  The Gensets use the lowest set of speed steps, and Road Diesels and Steam engines use the same set, and the R27 Subway use a faster set of speed steps.  My first Legacy engine (Big Boy) runs at the same speed as my more recent EM1 and my UP FEF3 MU's with a new UP SD-40.  If you are running a DCS train and a Legacy train on the same track, you most likely have an easier time matching the Legacy set to the DCS train than 2 DCS trains because at speeds below 30 smph (DCS) you have 3 speed steps to find a match.  Before Legacy, I did have a couple of MU's of Kline RS3's that MU'ed well; however, as John indicated above, the TMCC stuff is interesting.

The Genset is pretty amazing in how slow it will go.  Note that if you do a lash-up with the Genset and a road diesel, they will shift the speed steps of the Genset to match the faster engine.

For TMCC/Legacy mixed MU setups, the TMCC should be the lead engine, because they'll all be running in TMCC mode.  However, getting the speeds matched may be somewhat difficult.
