Hello;

I am new here and have a Reading 4 -6-2 (Model#6-18004) and regardless of where the speed is set it runs at full throttle and whistle does not stop blowing. I have checked the transformer (MW 6-4690) and a/c voltage goes from 10.9 – 20.4 when the rheostat is adjusted from low to high. Everything worked fine 27 years ago when stored. This is probably something simple, I am just a novice who wants set it up for my grandson. Any help you can give me or telling where I can find would be appreciated.

Thanks,

John

  That is very close too much voltage for modern locos (20v), be careful. Check the right terminals are used. It does not have a common ground, so dont mix track and acc. power.  Run the acc. off one or the other.

   Is it used alone? If not, you likely need to phase the additional transformer to the first one.

Asuming the connections all right. The whistle blowing non stop indicates a constant dc (or dc offset) is being produced. That is a solid state transformer so there lots of internal components that could cause the dc.

Some electronics do have a shelf life of sorts; capacitors mostly, and that was a bad era.
