Eric Siegel - OGR Review

When I got into this hobby last year, Eric's Trains on YouTube was my #1 learning tool.  I love that channel.  I wish he was more prolific.  I understand he can't produce daily videos.  It's not his day job.  I only wish it was!

Eric is very thorough in his research, and is well poised when giving the operating presentation of Lionel Legacy products, MTH products, operating cars, electronic data, You name it, he can simply give the best reviews of any model related to our Hobby of Model Trains.  The recent Lionel Radio Station....I enjoyed listening to his view of the Lionel sound PFE Reefers yesterday afternoon.  I have the set and did not know they had that many features....Wow, We are Blessed to have his talented review which really enhances  our love of model trains.  Thank you Eric....

We are definitely happy to have Eric on board with the OGR team providing product reviews for the magazine. I just finished editing a couple of his reviews for the June/July issue, and he recently informed me of two he has planned for the August/September issue. Eric is certainly well known and highly respected in our segment of the hobby, and I know that his efforts are greatly appreciated by others, be they new to the hobby or experienced veterans in the world of O gauge railroading. 

This may seem minor......yet I appreciate the fact that Eric will point out an engines' feature using perhaps a pencil, or marking pen to point out exactly what he is describing, so that I really understand what he is talking about.  Also, he seems to go about any review starting at the same spot -ie-  the front of an engine and then methodically working his way around or going from front to back.      Yuuuupppp.........good insightful reviews!

Agreed.  When it comes to YouTube, a little production value goes a long way.  He's also mic'ed up, enunciates, and the lighting is good. 

I have always enjoyed his YouTube presentations.

I really enjoy Eric's reviews and videos on YouTube, but I haven't gotten my nose into the magazine as yet(still catching up on a few other issues). The thing I really enjoy though is that we all have our tastes, and he often states that some may not like this, or people prefer that instead of this. It is interesting to see someone go through a review about something that I may not buy, but given the presentation I may consider some. This for me is mostly diesel as I am a big steamhead but do enjoy a review of stuff like that from time to time. I also think that his comments concerning the manufacturers comparison is right, you can't and shouldn't compare against each other. The industry doesn't need a yardstick between them because you can't and often times personal preference makes that a moot point. "I like this, that's what I'm sticking to", " Well, I like that, go jump in a lake". Keep the yardstick out for when the manufacturers remake something that they did good or bad on in the past to see if they've done better.

All said, I have been watching his videos since I think mid-2014 or so, don't quite remember. Regardless, keep up the great work.

He is a fun person to talk to, and Brian has a Model Train Store That takes hours to review. His inventory is amazing. The layouts in the back of the store are very nice and fun to watch.  (Eric, Leapin Larry, Brian) I think OGR is in good hands with Eric doing the new reviews. Happy Railroading 

Have always enjoyed kicking back with a beverage and watching one of Eric's videos. They influenced my purchasing more than once.

Don't like that photo of him with the short hair, though. I hope he's not going all "corporate" on me, now that he's a big shot in the publishing world.

One other thing, it is very cool to actually see what the LHS's take on stuff as well. I loved it every time Eric posted a video inside the store.

Received my copy today around 11AM EDT.  Congrats on your first review. I am also a Chessie fan, in 1979 we purchased our first house in downtown Plymouth, Michigan. We used to walk to the Chessie yard, that had a operating roundhouse. Most of the roundhouse has been torn down and the CSX uses the remaining building for storage. 

One of our first locomotive was a Lionel Chessie #8470. Built 1974 from the General Mills Era, purchased this loco used at a train show at Ann Arbor High School. Still have the locomotive and went to the same train show about three weeks ago.

A few suggestions for Eric:

1. could you put the product number in the box of information about the locomotive.  This will help anyone who wants to buy the locomotive;

2. can you put the pulling power in the box of information about the locomotive.  I found this in the body of the article, but it would be helpful to have it summarized in the info box;

3. perhaps you already do this, but it would be cool to have a review video accompanying the print review in OGR.  Printing a link to the video would be very helpful.

Eric, great to see you here.  I always go to your "You Tube" when considering a purchase.  On a side note, I expected you would have reviewed the Acela.  I did not see it.  I took the leap of faith and purchased 2.  Great set.

Sure, no prob. For #3, the stuff I review for the magazine will generally also be reviewed on youtube as well...although they may not perfectly line up time-wise as the magazine articles have to be written several months in advance.

Thank you Eric for your fantastic website and youtube videos.........Lots of great information from trackwork, tunnel building and product reviews. So much better than reading a magazine.

Eric has a gift in his ability to do product reviews and how to videos. I wish he had the ability to do them

on a weekly basis because everyone has benefitted, from the person with one train and a loop of track,

to the person with a basement full, to every company that makes a train related product. Thank you
