How would I extend the range of the Legacy signal if I would be operating one layout that is in two different rooms? or for that matter one large room? Thanks for any help.

not trying to be mean but your answers are in the reference section
I had a carpet layout similar to what your doing. I tried a larger antenna on my base, but it did not seem to penetrate the walls well. I also tired to move the base station. None worked.
If your up to it (involves money) my best solution that worked perfectly was getting the LCS Wifi Module and using your smart phone with the iCab app. Together they ran about the same price as a Legacy 993, if your going to have multiple operators this is the best cost effective way to do it.
Anyways the way my wifi in the house is setup I have very strong signal from having hardwired ethernet to base stations throughout the house. I made the LCS Wifi Module link up to my existing Wifi Network rather than create its own network. I don't want to get too much into details, but it's better to have it join my existing network in my situation.
Surprisingly enough the command signal that goes through the outside rail was fine the whole time. I was never certain if it was the command signal in the track not working over large distances or if it was the remote to base signal not penetrating through the walls. Take what you need from my post and good luck.
BTW I don't know too much about this stuff, and my information is from testing and experimenting. This Legacy stuff is super new for me.

Thank you, I am not that familiar with the forum or how to use it yet. appreciate your references.
Here's a direct link to the post about the hi-gain antenna. I can run my Legacy/TMCC stuff from my back deck, 80 feet away.

Thank you for the reference-that should solve my problem.

Let me know if that works later. I tried that same antenna and a different one of the same specs from that same link last year and it didn't work for me. I could physically see my legacy base through the hallway but as soon as I'm 1 inch into the next room (two rooms away 30ft from the base) the remote couldn't send signals to the base, but in the same location my solution above works fine. Hopefully you don't have too much wireless congestion where you live.
Any one of those will get the job done. They're all 9db gain antennas. The one thing that is sometimes useful is one with a base so you can position the antenna at an optimal height.
If you really want to reach out, pair the 9db antenna with this booster and replace their 5db antenna:

Thanks John
John, interesting Ebay link about a powered antenna with a (hoped for) 13db gain. I am another one of those who has never found a solution for the low power of the Legacy base. In fact, whenever I have visitors over I use my CAB1, since the CAB2 is useless if there are several people between me and the base. I've tried replacing the Lionel antenna with a supposed high gain antenna, mounted near the ceiling, but found no improvement, so went back to the Lionel antenna.
So, my question is whether you have personally tested that combination of the antenna/booster or any of the other higher gain antennas? Your research has always been right on, so would be interested to hear what has worked for you.
I have tested it indirectly. I used the 9db antenna at our club layout and it solve the issue we were having around the corner with the Legacy system. I never had the need for a powered booster.
I have a 2W Wi-Fi booster than I use on my home network, it makes a huge difference in the signal strength at the far end of the house. My router is on the 2nd floor at one end of an 85' house, I can now go anywhere in the house and get a good WiFi signal. This is the one I bought.

we did not really have an issue but got the antenna anyway and saw a good improvement. now we can operate our trains from a large area outside the train room we are in.
I may have to get me that signal booster for the backside of the house.
