No problem at all, and #22 wire works fine. There is very little current flowing in the controls of the Fastrack switches, so any length (within reason), should work.

Hi David, Bryan is right. Use phone cord wire. Many hardware stores stock 4 conductor phone wire color coded to match. Any connection method to hook the wire ends together is fine so long as the connection is good.
You can even use the little connectors the phone line uses. They are with the phone hardware section at store. There is such low current flow to these controllers you will have no problems.
You can extend them as long as needed without worry. For an experiment I used a 100' roll of phone cable. Worked perfect even that long.

If you take the cover (4 screws on the bottom) you will uncover a 4 pin connector where thestock cable is fastened, and you can connect your long cable there without making the splice. Much neater and can be returned to stock later.

I use Cat 5 or 6 patch cords to wire extensions.. this allows for putting a wire under every screw on the switch terminals and deciding at the connector which ones to use.
