Hi   Has any one tried using rare earth magnets to improve the field on old open frame motors, or wound electromagnetic fields ?. I have a model where a can motor is hard to use. I also feel the original motor would be nice to preserve, because it adds to the caricature of the model.     Thanks Stephen    (cTr...Choose the Right)

I have done this to a couple of old Akane (HO) locos that belonged to a buddy.

The overheating went away and they were able to pull very well.. I used magnets

from these guys:

The ancient Pittman open frame motors (DC91? DC71?) exhibited a bit more

cogging but overall performance was much improved.

It was simply a matter of measuring the height of the old AlNiCO magnet and

replacing with (in this case) a couple cylindrical magnets of the same height,

side by side,  straddling the screw that held the top and bottom plates of the

motor together.
