Just thought I would share a new design we are finishing up. An Ingot mold for O scale Steel Mills. It has the proper tapered look, I just couldn't get it to show up in the pictures for some reason. These will be made in resin and should be shipping the week of Feb 6. This will be the first release in a whole series of O scale Steel Mill items. Let us know what else you would like to see available for Steel Mills. Oh, and yes the Ingot Mold Buggies are in the works too! Will update pictures once we have one assembled and painted, the pictures are of one master.

Where's the ears for the stripper crane.  They always had the ears on the side for the crane to grab onto.

It's not a complete finished model yet as I stated, but to answer your question the ears are laying right beside it in the picture. We chose not to attach them to the ingot for the molding process as from pictures we have show the ears were put on different sides of the ingot, so this will allow the modeler different options. Thanks for your input!

Marty,

Here are some links for O scale products I would like to see:

Lifting Tongs that work:

Figures, rolling mill presses etc

Hope some or all are doable!

Thanks for the advice, those are great suggestions that we were thinking about doing as well, but it's always great to know others were thinking like us before investing time in a project. The ladles were the next thing I was going to work on. We just poured one of the first molds for the ingot so hopefully in a few days we will have a updated picture of the completed model. Will look forward to seeing your great weathering skills on these!

Marty, thanks the kinds words--- and thank you even more for the products you are producing and introducing!     I was contemplating ingots and a ladle..... glad to see you are going to offer them.      Please advise as to your thoughts on a press; otherwise I will  push forward with making some.

I would like to see some ladles as I am still plugging away at my "Last great project"..... The steel mill.

Not being a nasty person and don't get upset at me saying this, I appreciate your efforts and I hope the molds are a success but keep in mind Tom Yorke makes ingot molds and buggies in O scale I have a stack of them wish you guys would not duplicate items to late now to say that but now it's all or nothing, on the other hand hope you make the ladles soon I don't know of anyone else that does in O I would buy them, a few for my foundry a couple more on a heavy duty depressed flat being delivered new,  and even a few more on heavy duty mill owned flat cars as a move between the furnace and the foundry carrying Hot Metal. Yeh sounds good bring em on!

Have been away in the bush only back a few days trying to get use to the city life again have been modifying a couple of Atlas SW's for the Steel Mill internal moves cutting down the cab roof for clearance and turning them into Zombies maybe there is a project in Resin..... making cut down and blanked off cabs for Atlas SW's for a steel mill it's radical but they had them.

No offense taken at all. I actually didn't know Tom Yorke (a great inspiration to me) was making them. I am sure with his other great kits which I own most of will be a limited run, but who knows! To be honest I would still have made them. The reason being is at our club there are 2 guys who worked at the steel mill in Youngstown for many years. One of which still works at a smaller plant. They have built a museum quality steel mill at our club in HO Scale and it's been driving me nuts that this stuff has not been easily available in O scale. It's great being able to get first hand knowledge of how the things actually looked rather than looking at a picture and guessing as we have to so much in modeling. It's amazing how many different shapes and styles these Ingot molds were with all different shapes of corrugation inside etc... which we will be making several different versions. My opinion and strictly my opinion is while I can build pretty much anything I want, I still buy other people's kits and details to use on my layout to create a mix and not make everything look like it was built by the same person. The way most of us are wired we always tend to build everything the same way and when its done it looks like it, so its great to stick something from someone else to break up "the same". That's why I have brass and plastic versions of the same cars from different manufactures as each brand varies some as well as the real thing did, to me creates the best scene! Same thing goes with the ingot molds, when you study the pictures you will see so many slightly different to major differences. So thanks for letting me know about Mr Yorke making them as I will buy some of his as well to break up the sea of mine in my steel mill project. I never think it's a waste to have anything made in O scale rather a new product or a different vision of the same thing. Just like fire hydrants, at least a half dozen people make them including us in O scale, which is great as there were hundreds of designs in real life!

The ladles are defiantly happening. We actually had about a 2 hour conversation about these last night at the club regarding sizes and how they should look. It was great stuff, so now it's just getting everything plugged in CAD. Sadly the ladles will be after the Chicago show as we have a mountain of work to prepare for our 6 table display. Nothing of my post was meant to be offensive either as your mill and work look tip top and I am glad people model these mills, it's a great part of history which is fading fast. I will take some pictures of the HO mill at the club next time, maybe you can find some inspiration from something in the pictures.

Do you have any pictures of the style press you were interested in having?

Marty. (I hope that's your name!)

I did initially regret posting that message about Tom Yorke on your thread but then I thought, Hey!  America's a big place there is room for other firms to make items and to be honest I will be placing an order with you eventually that's if you ship to Australia, I hope so, lots of American firms do and I don't have any problems.

I am excited with what your doing in the way of Steel Mill parts as you would know building a Steel mill in any scale is such a big job more so in O scale as virtually everything has to be scratch built this is why I need the help of people like you to supply items that normally I would have to make and don't have the time to do it being a one man band. I might live in the middle of nowhere and thousands of miles away from you but I'm only a "click" away from ordering items thanks to the internet. I can always phone you (for a couple of dollars our calls are cheap for overseas) and have a chat but I bet you are a busy man so I will stick to the emails.

I would love to see photos of what your club is doing with their Steel Mill. I am an endless researcher and always learn something from other peoples work I have all the Morning sun books as well as lots of other publications and photos can always use more!

Thanks in advance. Roo. (Neville Rossiter)

ROO No offense taken. Yes we ship to Australia and just about anywhere else in the world. we also carry everything that Walthers offers at a discount so if you need something from them we could combine the shipping to save you.

The Youngstown Model Railroad Association is building a steel mill complex on their ho layout and it fairly complete, the 2 guys mentioned are very knowledgeable when it comes to steel mills. We are looking at building a mill on the O scale layout and need the items for that as well as we are also working on a home layout that needs a mill. so we are going to make all the details we can in O scale as so much is lacking and we feel there is a need. if you have any items you are looking for and have plans we would appreciate any help.

we are working on this in our spare time as we do 2 nights a week a the club, plus we also  have our automotive business to tend to, as well as preparing our displays for the Chicago O scale show where we have 6 tables. So bare with us and we will be adding much more to our line shortly.

We will post some pics of what they are doing so that you can maybe get some ideas for your own mill.

Just thought I would share the new ingot molds before painting them. I ended up making 3 sizes with help from 2 guys who worked in the mill. The 3rd size has corrugation inside and is about 1 1/2 the size of the largest pictured mold. Will update when they are painted and weathered.

Brad, I apologize I did not see your message, currently we do not have mail sacks.

They are now added to our website for Ordering

http://www.scalecitydesigns.com/Steel-Mill_c_134.html

I will have them at the Chicago March Meet Show, so make sure you stop by and check them out. We will be the 1st table on your left when you walk in the main entrance.

After our show season ends in April, we will be back to work on the other steel mill details! So stay tuned!

Glad to see what you have created and waiting to see what you have on the drawing boards for O gauge, as I have spent the past half dozen years recreating the J&L Southside Works in Pittsburgh.

Not sure if you are planning to do freight cars but an ingot car with fittings to align the ingot molds would be great.  I would also like to see the actual ingots modeled.  If you have ever seen the O gauge layout at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, there is a steel mill complex which includes ingots in various colors as they cool having come out of the molds and as I recall, are lit from inside.

One of my structures is an electric arc furnace.  The scrap metal which is loaded into the electric arc furnace is first loaded into scrap buckets or scrap boxes, if you are looking for ideas.

Finally, in a steel mill complex there are different types of ladles, ladle stands, and J hooks and yokes for beneath overhead cranes.  Models of all these would be much appreciated by those who model steel mills.

Can't wait to see what is to come!

Hi DRC

Thanks for all your information, The ladles, hooks, etc... will be happening for sure! Do you guys have a certain size that would work best for your mills? I know most of use have to build them a bit under scale for everything to fit. So what would be your input for size recommendation of the laddles?  I would also be thrilled to see your work and furnace!

Marty.

I just placed an order with you went to pay and forgot my Paypal password !

Never do that, took me nearly an hour to sort it out endless checks, then left it to long security number expired, had to start again, the next email then took a while to come through for the second time, if it wasn't morning I would have gone and had a stiff drink to calm me down had to settle for a strong black coffee.  Oh, for the old days, just a quick call quote your credit card number and it's all over, not your fault just hard to sort through for an old bloke like me who doesn't use the computer all day, I got there in the end, next time I should be right I'll keep my fingers crossed and don't lose that @%#&%@ password again that's what started all this. I do understand why you need so much security nowadays.  Roo.

Friends

Just back from a walk in the bush hurt my back guess the old war wounds are catching up to me. Anyway it's not all gloom and doom a couple of parcels were waiting for me when I got home one was from Scale City designs opened that first was not disappointed, great products and the service is something to write about 15 days from the time I ordered that is good for where I live and the items were well packed hope other hobby suppliers are reading this don't be frightened about shipping to Australia we are not living in the Stage Coach days anymore!

Thanks Marty for the quick service and your wonderful product. Got to give credit where it's due and thanks to the OGR Forum that's where I found out about this product.  Now down to the physio for some work on the back then it's back to the layout,  I'm happy. Roo.
