I have a 164 log loader on its way to me.  In the meantime I was looking to make space for it on the layout.  I was hoping someone has one and can tell me the footprint.  I plan on having tracks on both sides of it so I don't know if that adds a little bit more for space between the unit and each  track.

Thanks,

Ed

While on this subject, what types of log dump cars will work with the #164. I bought an MTH dump car, but it appears rather long to be used. Any suggestions? Also need the car to work with the #364 Lumber Mill

I have had a 164 on my layouts for last 50 years and have tried all kinds of log cars options including the MTH. I still like a strings of PW Lionel cars. They are the right size, reliable, and look great with the cast base. I just used a little shoe polish on the blued surface of the metal plate that the logs sit on so it does not shine when there are no logs in the car.

Why not just build a log & lumber operation. I have limited space so my attempt at this is small and along the mainline. Note that I have the 164 and the sawmill are side by side and I have the operating tracks functioning together so when I trigger one, both dump. These cars, in black. are cheap at about $20. I have a bunch and every once in a while make a big string and operate logs to my hearts content.

Ed, when you finish finding room for all the lumber yard, find some siding space for your favorite coal devices. The 97 is the same story as the 164 and I really love the way the MTH loader works with the ramp and 397.

Same story also on the PW 3469 coal cars. Cheap and in a string of 6-8 look fantastic. The ramp hoppers work great and because I use DCS, my control up & down the ramp is perfect. All the unload tinplate tracks are controlled from the DCS AIU's and the remote.

Hugh,

You must be a mind reader. I started rearranging some things to make room for a lumber operation as well as a coaling operation.  I still have  the PW coal loader that I got for Christmas in the 50's, and also the modern MTH loader.  I don't  know why but I never paid attention to the coal ramp.  I am definitely going to look into that and work it in.

Thanks  for the great ideas and especially for the pictures.

Nicely done Hugh. About as good as it can get considering how toylike it is.

I had the #164 on my layout for the longest time. Loved the way it operated.  But as trains became more prototypical, the #164 became an albatross in desperate need of a facelift to fit in.

I picked up the command controlled version on a blowout a few years ago (the double ugly one with blue base). Like you, someday I hope to improve its appearance and put it back on the layout.
