Indeed! The technology was created in the late 60s by a hobbyist but it wasn’t until 2003 that Hornby worked with the gentle man to turn his designs into a mass production model. Unfortunately, due to bad operating instructions from Hornby and the 2008 recession Hornby no longer produces these models.

This is in OO, or HO, gauge. Amazing stuff considering how small it is!

That is quite impressive being OO.  I've only seen one HO live steam locomotive in my life.  Very cool.

@D500 - You know its amazing (and perhaps indicative of that earlier era) that NYC actually tried the "jet powered" RDC.  I have seen pictures of the real thing.   What interests me is that the exhaust of the jet engines is just forward of the intakes for the Diesel engines (at least I think that is what those screens on top are for) and I wonder how the diesels liked eating the jet exhaust.

Great picture

Don

There are several videos of the jet RDC running on YouTube.  (My favorite is the one with "Free Bird" playing in the background. Blasting by.)

Of course, the RDC diesels were not running during the jet tests - they may have been removed....?

The jet tests were not a motive power experiment - the Air Force jets were used because no diesel or electric loco of the era, fast as some of the electrics were, could achieve the speeds needed to test high-speed rail technology (this pre-dated the TGV, and was about the same time that the Japanese Shinkansen showed up). The tests were a success - the RDC was stable on the track at high speed - it hit 184 MPH. 184: an RDC, on regular (but real good) track, 1960's. Yeah.

The RDC was returned to regular service after its Commodore Vanderbilt-design cowl was removed. The windows in that cowl were actually diesel locomotive number boards.

My front-end subject for Friday, August 30, 2024 is Boston & Maine GP7 #1562, a model made by Sunset Models/3rd Rail in 2021 with MSRP $699.95. It is highly detailed, has fixed pilots, and is powered by a horizontally-mounted Canon Motor that drives the wheels through a toothed belt. It has ERR Cruise, TMCC, EMD GP Prime Mover sounds and a smoke system. I run it conventionally on Atlas O-54 curves and switches. Slow-speed operation and acceleration are very smooth

@MELGAR That’s a sharp looking GP7.
My entry for this FEF is a F3.
@mike g. Here is an F3 that you can see live, even touch it, ride behind it; or for a few extra coins ride in the cab with the engineer through Royal Gorge That’s Royal Gorge, CO. I took my Dad on this great experience.

Good morning and happy Front End Friday to all. This week on the Marx layout, I'm running my tiny little collection of Marx diecast steamers. Just two of them!

IMG_20240825_164739890IMG_20240825_164746332

Here's one of the 999s running with the six inch cars that I acquired it with. Runs pretty good for a little loco from the 1940s.

Hope your week is going much better than mine, and have a nice holiday weekend.

Here's my end of the front kind for this fine weekend!

" Busted!! "  Bad Boy Benny is always getting into trouble.  This time for using Horace Higgenbottom's, the Free State Junction Railway's MOW Superintendent,  unoccupied parked car for target practice.   It seems Mr. H parked his car here before departing on an inspection train to eye the line.   As a bystander overheard Benny saying" But Officer Lance I didn't think the gol dang thing was loaded!"  "Tell that to Judge Cratchet! " was the officer's reply.

Well Happy F.E.F. everyone.  This is my 1938-39 Marx Commodore Vanderbilt , clockwork locomotive in red.  She is matched with the red/black NYC "wagon top" tender from the same years.  Unlike the electric powered versions from Marx, the clockwork engines did not have either the CV plates on the sides or the NYC oval on the front.  As you can see the front was somewhat "flat" compared with the electric CV locomotives.

Here is a better look at her with her tender.

Happy Friday everyone, hope your weekend goes well.  Best Wishes

My front-end view for this Friday shows New York Central 0-8-0 steam locomotive #415, an MTH Railking model (30-1123-1, MSRP $399) with PS1 delivered in 1997. It’s been running on my layouts for twenty-six years, still looks brand new, and has been a bargain in terms of initial cost per hour of operation. It runs like a postwar Lionel engine but with sounds.

Well for today, I have resurrected an oldie for sure.  Dating from 1928-1929  in dark green with red painted pilots is the Chicago Flyer (American Flyer) # 3110 steeple cab electric.

Here she is pulling her passenger train of American Flyer (Chicago Flyer) #1206 passenger cars , so called "Lightning Bolt" cars from the early 20's.   Yes I know this is the "rear end" but its the best picture I have that shows the cars...so pretend its backing up !

Best Wishes...Don
