Unfortunately it is a cost benefit study.  It would most probably cost MTH at least 274K to 325K to tool this locomotive.  But as I recall Lionel did make a scale size one so they would/should only have to retool for a can-motor.

Here's a video of a few years ago of my friends SP U33C loco running at the Dodge City Kansas Train Show, the engine goes by blue towel hill and yellow plug scenic view.

Lionel did indeed make a scale one of these. I saw one at a train show just a few weeks ago  with a $275 price tag. 

Sometimes, I change all ten loops of the layout from eastern railroads to Union Pacific, such as these two...FrankM
