The UP didn't care much for their 4-10-2s as built because they all were rebuilt later with two cylinders.  Thus there would not appear to be much demand for models of that class compared to other types of UP locos.

The SP 4-10-2 was first imported by Max Gray during the later 1950s-early '60s, and as noted in a post above, was offered by Sunset just a few years ago.  If one has the necessary craft skills, it might be possible to convert an SP to a UP  by stripping the boiler and changing the smokebox front and necessary details.  That would definitely be a "custom build" proposition.

Thanks for all the replies.

Looks as if I'll be on my own for this model.  I suspected this may be the case.

I have the SS SP model.  I bought it with the intent to modify into the UP 3 cyl version.

Eventually I'll build the 2 cyl version.  Have some projects to finish first.

I appreciate all the information as I'm still relatively new to 2R.

Bill Kennerley built a 2-10-2, and Bud Cantlay converted it to a 4-10-2.  Sorry, no photos.  It may have gone through Art Hayes' hands.

The problem with converting SP to UP and vice versa is the cab placement.  SP cab roofs on Decks and SP-class were darn near as low as the top of the boiler, and UP cabs stick up kinda like the PRR A5.

The solution here is a good scratchbuild.  One could start with the Sunset SP 4-10-2, since the boiler is incorrect anyway.

I like Western steam power, but find the UP Mountains and ten- coupled to be ungainly.  I liked the Hariman Pacifics and MacArthurs as built, but they lost something, in my opinion, with the giant stacks and modified tenders.

If others think the same as me, no wonder these things have not been produced.

I love the Challengers - finishing up one this evening.  I think I have six!  And at least three FEFs reside here. Plus a Big Boy made from a Challenger kit - and a lot of yellow and gray Diesels.

Thanks.  I was "scratchbuilding" a Challenger boiler for a thread here a long time ago.  Last night I put the last appurtenances on it and bead- blasted it.  Expect photos "over there" of the complete but unpainted model soon.

I am having great problems with the new Windows 10  Aviary photo loading scheme - as usual the programmers made it much better than the older stuff, and now I have to do great battle just to get photos from my camera into my computer files.  I can do it, but each time I am successful I cannot seem to remember how long enough to write a coherent recipe.

All that is unrelated to my inability to load photos here - it is still trivial on all other forums.
