Back when the 700E was first issued, Lionel released scale freight cars for it in addition to the Madison cars.  They were numbered 714, 715, 716, and 717.

Does anyone know / have part numbers, if Lionel ever re-issued them when they did the remake in 1990?  I don't have access to my 1990 catalogs, and searching online only brings up hits for the originals.

Thanks!

Carl,

Don't forget about 51401 - Pennsy boxcar and 51301 Lackawanna reefer. It should be noted that the Chesapeake stock car and Lackawanna reefer were additions to the original 4-car reissue.

I made a fairly significant investment in all the cars. Years later, I'm really glad I own them, even with the newer, more detailed rolling stock avaialble.

As posted Lionel made a set as did Williams. The Williams are brass with a glossier finish but decent repros. MTH also made 4 car set in their Railking line. The cars are all diecast. The caboose, hopper, and boxcar are decent copies. The tank car was issued with a walkway and railing around the dome like a chemical tank car. K-Line made a B&O hopper. Not sure about the other three cars.

One other point, Lionel's reissue was called semi scale. I assume because of the non scale couplers so technically they are not the 714-717. For some reason the caboose was issued with the trucks located in the same location as the semi scale 2957 caboose rather than the correct location on the 717. MTH and Williams chose to mimic Lionel's lead and installed their trucks in the wrong location as well.

As far as I know, the cars were only offered once. In addition to the six cars mentioned above, there was also a second caboose.

The second caboose commands the highest price, followed by the two newly designed cars: the Lackawanna reefer and C&O stock.

Of the four original cars, I'd put the order (high to low) as: tank, caboose, boxcar, hopper.

The cars have knuckle couplers.

I'd think the two bakelite boxcars in that set would be more desirable then the tank car since Lionel ran a string of those diecast tank cars a few years after.

Could be wrong but I think they are still the only Bakelite boxcars produced since the originals in 1938.

My ranking was based on the prices realized on EBay when I was watching those cars a few years ago.
