Have not had that problem. Recently, (this month), I was working on my layout and had to move a couple of old first generation Rail King steam engines around the table top. I took Chesapeake and Ohio Berkshire no. 2744 and sat it on the track not even trying to get the wheels lined up on the rails or the tender connected up. I purchased this Berkshire new about 10 years ago after seeing it on the cover of CTT where it was featured in a "Steamer Showdown!" article. The next night I went down to run trains and forgot I had left this on the track. When I turned the power on it started making sounds like it wanted to run. This is a locomotive I purchased new and NEVER ran before. It took right off and now I am running it regularly. The sounds are not as good as PS 2.0 but it is neat to look down the smoke stack and see the red ring of the heating element. Prior to this run, this locomotive just sat around near an engine shed on my layout as decoration without ever being operated since the date of manufacture. After everything I have read here about the batteries, I had little expectation it would operate but it is now pulling a passenger train like the true champion of the Steamer Showdown!!
