Hello, kind of new here but have a nagging question for some of you folks with larger steamers. I was going through some of my old magazines and read an MR article about a O scale club in Denver, and it was a 2 rail layout. I remember vividly a picture showing a Rio Grande L-105 challenger, and in the text the article stated twice that this engine weighed 25 lbs. That figure always impressed me. After I got into 3 rail O gauge, I picked up a few older scale articulateds, a MTH Proto 1 N&W 2-6-6-4, C&O 2-6-6-6, and a Williams brass cab forward. The MTH engines are a little over 16 lbs and the Williams seems just a little lighter.  I have heard that the Lionel Big Boys weigh in at 20 lbs, but this is still 5lbs lighter that that L-105, which is a smaller engine. I still can't figure it out, unless they added weight to make it pull better? I couldn't imagine any sound equipment adding to the weight, as this article was from the late 80's.

 

I know most people here probably don't weigh their engines, but I was curious if anyone has ever seen any other O gauge steamers that break the twenty pound mark? Sorry to start out with such a crazy question, but its been bugging me ever since I read that article.  Thank you.

Thank you all for your responses. I agree that it seems like the brass engines are lighter that the die cast. I also have a Williams E6s that i recently bought, and had it apart last night for maintenance and was noticing how thin and light the boiler was compared to my die cast engines of similar size. I just can't figure out that L-105, unless they filled every nook and cranny with lead to give it more traction? I just can't imagine that it left the factory that heavy! The article said they were so hefty that they had to change to heavier code rail because they were wearing the switches out! Thank you again! John.

You got to remember with most brass steam engines they put in lead weights to compersate the weight factor for traction..both of mine got lead weight about 4" long and 1"thick..

i'll second that.  my Weaver scale GG1 is brass, but one of the heaviest locomotives i own.  the only single engine i have that can pull 100 freight cars.

A lead weight must be the answer, because that L-105 I believe was a Key Imports brass model, not diecast. At 25lbs, I bet it would pull stumps out of the ground! 

 

The heft of these trains is one of the reasons I switched from HO. You really feel like you get your money's worth when you pick up two handfuls of steamer, not to mention that weight seems to keep them on the track a little better too!

same here..Id bought a BLI PRR Q2 loved that steamer awsome sound system,the best one I'd ever heard..but it was plaged wih proublems..bad smoke units that shorts out and can cause electrical proubles with the train.. went threw 3 of them with the same proublems..Said heck with it.. If im spending 500 for a brass HO? I'll rather spend 500 on a used brass scale O gage steamer!I did..
