That's a tough one.  I have been given a few train items as gifts, and unless I specifically asked for it, it has usually been something I didn't want!... I have mostly MTH New Haven and New York Central, and someone gives me a Lionel Union Pacific freight car. (no offense intended, you UP guys!)

I think it would be a lot better idea to ask for a few ideas from your father, and get him something he wants!  Ask for a few items, and pick what fits your pricing - that way he won't know what he's getting!

I agree with rest and if you don't know his favorite shop than cash or VISA gift card inside a card marked FOR TRAINS would be best.   We are a strange lot---a gift card which buys the most mundane item(s) to others usually is something that will put a bright smile on our faces!
