Picked this up at TCA Saturday. Any ideas of the maker. Looks Euro to me. There is no pick up plate, but the drivers are not insulated so I am sure it should be 3 rail. Also the top section of the wafer plates pivots up. Part of a reverse mechanism? I figured the education was worth the purchase price.

Hi, it looks very Bing to me,I have several late Bing O gauge locos,circa 1927 to 1932,and your motor matches in a number of ways,such as the wheels,the top part of the field moving,which is part of the reverse mechanism,and the screws in the mounting brackets at the ends,which hold the top and bottom halfs of the motor together.

 

They are great runners,but yours looks to have quite a few parts missing,particularly most of the reversing mechanism.

That is a Bing reversing motor, it was used in the cast and sheet metal American locos as well as being used in a number of continental loco. Maybe I should have said it is half of a reversing motor. Besides the pickup plate there should be a bronze spring that makes the hinged field section open up when the power is off, a pivot lever attached to the side of the motor and operated by the movement of the hinged field segment. The lever in turn toggles a plate (missing) attached to the fiber contact plate that is still present, back and forth on each application of power to effect reversing (think Lionel Pendulum reverse or Flyer or Marklin hinged field reverse units) Sill it is enough that it will hold a shell up on the shelf and could be wired for single direction operation, or a contemporary electronic reverse connected. A pickup plate could be fabricated possibly from a modified Lionel plate. The lugs on the plate engage the cut out slots on the bottom and the plate is locked in place by a small cheese head screw with a washer on the end. (much handier for removal than spreading the frame with "C" clip pliers!)
