Hello fellow train hobbyists

I made a huge mistake buying a MTH 2-6-6-6 Allegheny from a crook on EBay.
It did run except for the lights but after taking it to Riders Hobby in Flint Michigan Dave and Cheryl told me the Constant Volatage board was fried and the chassis was bent because someone dropped the engine . The seller lied and I’m not sure if EBay will help me out. The engine took a long time to get to get to me due to Covid and it took even longer to get it in for service again due to Covid.

I would like to try and fix the engine some way. Does anyone have a spare AG 00000 12 Constant Voltage Board they could sell me ? If not does anyone know where I might be able to send my CVB out for repairs.

The EBay seller said it was in “ Great Condition except for the non working lights”

Thanks in advance

i appreciate your responses the board i need to find is MTH model number AG 0000012 . John i did send a photo of the board you posted to Dave, Cheryl from Riders. Lets see what they have to say. Worse case scenario is to send the a electronic expert to see if it can be repaired. We talked about up grading to Proto 3 but it would not fix the lighting issue. It runs just fine with the exception of the lights and bent trucks and block. Im determined to get her up and running.

I aprreciate everyones interest in trying to help

PS

gunrunnerjohn / is there a model number on the board you posted, and can you tell me which engine it may have come from ? TY

Thank you

I don't know what locomotive it came from, but I can tell you it was steam.   Many of the PS/1 models use the same or a similar board.

Here's an assortment of them from my parts box, note they're very similar but have some variation in the designs.  I think most of them still have similar capabilities, just the layout seems to have changed slightly between production runs.  Then there's the "compact" version at the top.  Also, some of them were soldered in, others had connectors.

Perhaps it goes without saying, but I'm wondering what "fried" on the CV board.  Did your LHS email you a photo of the board that you can share?  Do they NOT do component-level repair?  That board is so "simple" that I'm guessing it would be easier to repair it than replace it given the apparent confusion in narrowing down exactly which version of CV board you actually have/need.

Since it appears the previous owner abused the engine, I'd be suspicious that the wiring to the lights were damage perhaps causing some kind of short-circuit in the lighting.  And that's what blew up the CV board.  So if you simply install a new CV board it too might fry.  Wouldn't that be a fine how-do-you-do.

Just my 2 cents.

choochookid i can personally tell you you will get your money back from eBay even if the sellers refuses you have to open up a case with eBay and they WILL get you paid back, also you can return any item purchased even if you changed your mind and the seller has to pay return shipping label and email to you , if  you decide you don't want it as I have said ! ask me how I know been there done that and have the tee shirt to prove it !

Ebay Seller Crook / Samdepau0 or sgator82 / warning don’t buy from him ☠️☠️☠️

So here’s the latest on my Allegheny 2-6-6-6 proto 1 before I continue here’s the EBay sellers I’d name above. After I found out truck and block were damaged I asked to return the engine to the seller. He absolutely did not want it back. Gee I wonder why ! To be fair he did refund me around $245 out the $545 he originally sold it to me for. Samdepau0 knew the engine was really messed up he lied that’s why I want you all to know who this bum is so you don’t fall prey to his devious business practices. Shame on him the first  time shame on me the second time which there won’t ever be .  I hope none of you all fall victim to Samdepau0 pack of lies. Bottom line the engine was only really worth what the sound card was worth $75 bucks. I will get her up and running again, I don’t give up easily.

It appears that GunrunnerJohn has the right board to replace the old one with 👍 that’s the good news as long as it works. I’m not sure where I could take the old CV board for repairs, any ideas from all you good folk’s would be greatly appreciated for future reference.

I spoke with Cheryl , Dave from riders. They told me since the front truck is bent it more than likely will keep shorting out the CV Board unless I find someone to straighten it out or I do it myself. I’m pretty good with my hands. I think I could handle it but if anyone has any advice on how to proceed with this part of the project I’m all ears. Electronics is not one of my forte’s .

Cheryl and Dave are great, very helpful with this whole debacle. They did insulate the top of the truck with a Mylar type tape to temporarily keep the engine from shorting out but again it’s only temporary.

So next step is to order a replacement board from gunrunnerjohn but I think the bent truck situation needs to be fixed before I fry another hard to find CVB.

Hopefully with all your great ideas and advice I will get this old girl back to her original condition.

Very happy to see train show calendar starting to fill up again 😊hope to see you all out at the shows again.

PS will keep you all posted on how the repairs are coming along.

Thanks again for all your great advice !

I sent your CVB photo collection up to Riders in Flint Mi a couple days ago. The photo shows 7 various boards . The board on the far right appears to Dave , I to be the closest to our original CVB . I’m sure it works right and has been tested ? How much did you want for it and can you repair my old CVB if I send it to you.

How can I contact you via phone call ?

Thank you
