Right now on my layout I have 2 industries and the Great Lakes Car Ferry.  When I installed the car ferry I lost the area I had for my engine shed and locomotive servicing area.

I have always wanted to have a small locomotive shed along with a steam servicing area on a layout to park my locomotives but I also want operations on my layout where I can switch cars in and out.  There is no way I can get more space for the layout and I can't really add more sidings without the layout feeling over crowed.

The factory that is on the siding now that I would convert is just out of arms reach, and with kadees I can't just hit the uncouple button on the CAB 2 to spot cars.  I would have to install magnet uncouplers.

If I converted it into a engine storage area, with a single stall shed, a small pile of coal to load the tenders, a water spout and maybe a small area to dump ash I wouldn't have to worry about uncoupling cars just out of arms reach.

I really wanted to focus on operations on my layout but one of my operations could be servicing the locomotive along with loading and unloading the car ferry, servicing the grain elevator, a small track for a single box car to unload, and my commuter train stoping at the station.

What should I do!

An engine facility IS an industry

Just think of all the different types of commodities required to service locomotives: coal, water, sand, fuel oil, lubricants, spare parts, and a load of other supplies.  Just about every type of rolling stock (except maybe livestock cars) could be utilized and would involve a lot of switching possibilities.

Of course small RRs probably didn't have much in the way of engine facilities, some just used the outdoors (especially in warm climates), but they would still need all the stuff to run the trains.

I agree with AGHRMAtt.  Could you find a way to build both?  Then switch them out, like I do with my bucolic little mountain lake/rocket base/brewery trio?  You could build a version of each than you could remove and replace with the other in a few minutes, whenever you wanted.  It would not only give you your cake and the meal, too, but the removeability feature might be a fun challenge to build/add - it was for me.

Being able to switch out the scene sounds like a good idea.   Something to consider.

I also am thinking of using the siding where my grain elevator is.  I think it might be possible to add a small siding in one upper corner of the layout by expanding the table a bit.  I will have to measure it out though because there is a closet door there and if I can not open it all the way with my expansion the wife wont be happy.
