Folks, any suggestions, ideas or solutions will be much appreciated.

  • Engine in Question: Lionel 6-38080, TMCC, Western Pacific GS-64, released 2004
  • Environment:  Running on Lionel 180-Watt Brick;  Using a Cab-2 controller to run this engine
  • Problem:  On 3 separate occasions, I have lost smoke output.  The scenario has been the same each time.
  1. Engine will be running fine without any issues.  Smoke output normal.
  2. A car in the consist will derail causing a short and loss of power to track
  3. I restart transformer and engine following standard procedure on Cab-2: Engine, Enter Engine ID #, Aux-1.
  4. Engine restarts but no smoke produced;  Fan motor blowing air out and working in sync with engine chuff but no heat being produced
  5. I replace the heating element with Lionel 8ohm wire wound ceramic called for in this engine;  Start engine up again with new element and smoke feature working again;
  6. Oddly, the in 2 of the 3 instances the resistor I replaced tested fine;  Got a 9ohm reading on both;  The 3rd instance I couldn't get a stable reading

I'm perplexed as this hasn't happened with any of my other TMCC or Legacy steamers.  I sure don't like the idea of having to replace the heating element everytime something derails or causes a short/loss of track power.

Please help.  Any thoughts?

Most likely the resistor were fine.  The smoke unit is simple but it does have the ACREG for smoke.  I would try turning smoke on and off with Legacy to see if that restarts it.  Or as Bill said the Reprogram.  I imagine the ACREG is getting confused and not sending current for heater element.  Or the R2LC gets confused.  G

Gents, just wanted to report back my results.

I tried to reprogram per the manual instructions and it had no effect.  I was running this engine the next day at my club's layout so I just replaced the entire smoke unit and board since I had an extra on hand.

At some point when time permits I'd love to try to troubleshoot this to see what exactly was the problem, but I appreciate you folks pointing me in the right direction.  Now I know how to reprogram.
