Hi All!
I am looking for some advice on restoring the shell for the Polar Express 6-28649. I have several issues to deal with:
1) The bell cradle is broken (see pictures) and I am thinking of ordering a new one to replace it with. My question is whether there is a way to remove the old cradle. It appears to be two pins inserted into the shell body. Is there an easy way to remove it or am I looking at grinding the old one off and re-drilling holes for the new cradle?
2) The paint is chipped in several places. What is the best way to go about paint the shell? Are replacement decals available for the "1225" on the side of the cab?
3) Can the whole front boiler plate be removed instead of just replacing the bell cradle? If so, any advice on the best way to remove the plate?
4) Has anyone upgraded this locomotive with a cruise board? I think that would be cool. Or any sort of advanced sound features? We had the "sounds tender" but we sold that several years ago.
I tried looking for a new shell, but Lionel says they are unavailable and a search of the internet yielded no results. I would be open to replacing the shell if I could find one. This was my son's first locomotive and I do not want to simply buy a new one.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
