18 gauge wire should work fine depending upon how long the wire run is.
18 GA. Stranded. NOT solid.
Hi Fred,
I am just getting ready to wire a layout, 8' x 28' with three separate O gauge lines and two separate S gauge lines. The S gauge will be run off of a ZW.
Why do you recommend stranded instead of solid?
Thanks,
LionelFlyer
I always recommend stranded for stuff like this for a simple reason, it's much easier to work with! The trains will run just fine with either type of wire, but why make it harder to wire?
I have been playing with Alarm wire, paired, inexpensive, color coded and solid copper. (I prefer solid copper, no judgment on people who like stranded.)
$26 for 500 feet

I have also had good luck with speaker wire, again paired, inexpensive, color coded, stranded, many gauges out there.
Lionelflyer,
You did not mention what you plan to run, I have a layout, 8x38ft. I ran a buss wire for my tracks, two separate loops. I ran 14ga. stranded wire for the buss because I do run some post war locomotives. I have 18ga. wires connecting the track to the buss. Just a suggestion.
