help with a ps1 reset

Update to my first post.  I improved my up and down technique on the 1033 and cycled through until I got 3 clinks and 3 clanks.  I then did the holding of the whistle but did not get a 'soft, warbled bell sound'.  Does that mean that the reset did not work?  Loco still only runs in reverse.

The reset did not work.  When another engine is on the track and you press the whistle button does the whistle blow or the bell ring?  If the bell rings you need to swap the wires so you get the whistle sound.  Or you may need to wiggle the whistle button to get a good whistle signal, I think it needs at least 1 sec of seeing the whistle signal.

Thanks for the info, Gene.  All my other PS1 engines run OK on this track with whistle sounds when I move the lever on the 1033.  I'll try again and see if I can improve my timing.

Do you have another transformer?  The 1033 was made in the middle of the last century.

No such luck.  Everything else I have is too small.  I have a CW40 and some Tech2's.  Trying to use my Cab1 to go up and down is a pain.  I'll keep playing until I get the timing correct and the  three clink/clank and soft whistle sound.

Well, I am at my wits end with this reset.  Keep in mind that I'm using a 1033 which uses  a lever to select the whistle in lieu of a button.  I have no problem increasing power and coming back down to get the clinks/clanks needed to get to reset 18.  Right after I get my 3 and 3,  I leave the power where it is and move the whistle lever.  No matter what technique I use to activate the whistle(slow, fast), I always get a loud  one ding bell sound, not the soft warble bell.  Also, I'm wondering if maybe it could be a bad board.  When I bring the power up I get two bells.  I put the power down and bring it back up and I would expect to move forward.  The loco just sits there in idle mode.  I power down again and bring it up and it is still in idle mode.  The third time I bring it up the loco goes in reverse and all functions work(whistle, sound).  A real puzzle, hey?

Sounds like a bad fwd transistor on the bottom board.  That can be fixed.

For the reset after you get to reset 18, hold whistle button down to get the warbled followed by clear bell. Once clear you release the button.  Than press again to get one more bell.  That resets chuff.  Release button and move throttle off.  Turn back up to about 10V with in 1-3 seconds.  Engine is reset and should move forward.  G

GGG - Thank you, thank you, thank you.  Again, thanks to all for their advice.  GGG's method did the trick.  I still didn't hear what I'd consider a 'soft warble', but it must have been in there.  I followed your instructions and off he went in FORWARD.   Kudos to you.
