HO Magnelock track

I have a loop of it I got with the Santa Fe set.  Never tried it as a loop.  I wound up using the straight sections for a portable test track and they work fine.  It sounds like the surface it is on is not allowing the magnetism to draw the pieces together sufficiently.  The locomotive didn't really run too good, either.

Never looked at a piece in person or on paper for that matter. I am aware of the product. Could the areas where they connect electrically possibly be dirty?

Thanks for the responses - the track was brand new  the magnets are pretty strong and there does not appear to be any gaps at each interception - there are two small contacts in the middle of each piece that are pulled together by the magnets - i check them and they all are clean - i did notice that if i press down on the rails  near where the track joins - i get a little voltage response but not consistent - not sure if the rail is connected properly - i checked for continuity between track sections and only had 75% good - 25% had no continuity - i may just use the straight as a test track - but the quality of the connections is poor - BTW the track is very level and ni gaps - still dent work
