METRO Photography & Film Guidelines

The NEW METRO welcomes photographers and artists to photograph its system. In return, we simply request they use common sense and courtesy toward others in pursuit of their pictures.

Safety

The safety of our customers and employees is paramount throughout the entire METRO system. While photography is permitted in clearly defined public areas of the METRO system, it obviously cannot be permitted in any manner that would interfere with the safe movement of people or operation of vehicles.

For example, camera lights or flash bulbs should never be aimed in the direction of an oncoming vehicle or used within a moving vehicle. Camera or artist's tripods and other equipment should not be placed in any location that might interfere with the free and safe movement of people or vehicles.

Photography is obviously prohibited in any area of the METRO system that is not accessible to the general public.

While the law permits photography of private citizens in public places, as a courtesy we ask that photographers request permission of people before taking their pictures, especially close-ups.

Security

Worldwide terrorist attacks against public transportation facilities have required a tightening of security procedures at all METRO facilities. Security experts consider photographing and sketching public transportation facilities as possible pre-indicators of terrorist activity.

While this unfortunate reality has not resulted in a prohibition of photography, METRO police and other law enforcement may question anyone taking photographs or sketching METRO transit facilities upon complaint or based on activity suspicious in nature.

Obviously, these activities are almost always legitimate and that is the end of the issue. However, anyone conducting these activities in unauthorized areas of METRO property may be detained for further investigation.

Commercial and Media Photography

All requests for commercial photography may be sent via email to the METRO Press Office at mm53@ridemetro.org. Questions and additional information may be discussed by telephone at 713-739-4040.|

Media photography requests must be coordinated through the METRO Press Office by calling 713-739-4040.

Now, this sounds reasonable!

I currently live 6 blocks away from the Houston Metrorail and I can tell you that with the quality of people that hang around many stations along the short 8 mile route that I personally wouldn't be hanging around the line anywhere with a nice camera. It's tough enough to walk through one of those stations or around the area without an army of homeless people begging to the point of near assault for any money. I've heard every hard luck story and many of those people can be quite aggressive. I've been at this spot for 3 years and it has been 3 years too long. We are trying to buy a house right now elsewhere to get away from here. Good for Metro to allow this but do so at your own risk. Depending where you are it's going to be high. I'm personally not going to waste the time.
