I'm certainly no expert on turntable pits, but I think 5' 8" may be a little deep if you are talking about the depth from the top of the pit wall down to the rail. If you are talking about the TOTAL depth of the pit, then I think 5' 8" is a little shallow.

Check this photo from the Age of Steam Roundhouse turntable construction. The worker is kneeling where the circular rail will be installed and his hands are at the top of the pit wall. The bottom of the pit is at the level of the dirt in the lower left of the photo. That's got to be a good 8 to 10 feet for a total depth of the pit.

Turntables, all they do is go round and round! What can go wrong with them? Well, the motor will fail at the least opportune time. The d--- pit can fill with snow and the table can lift out of the center casting. The operator didn't realize that the table was lifting as he was turning it to keep the snow down.
