The prices of last year’s LC+ items are falling into the reasonable category, and I’d like to add a LC + GP-7 to my roster.  My only concern is that it might look huge.  I see that the LC+ version is 17.5 inches long,  but I was wondering how tall it is, and how wide.  I have predominantly PW locomotives, including a Lionel GP-7/9 that’s a mere 14.5” long & under 4.5” high.  The Lionel F3 & WBB Baldwin Sharknose I have are about the same dimensions also, as single units, not in their usual AA or ABA setups.

Any info you have is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I don't know where you saw that figure of 17.5 inches... maybe a typo or the one scale loco that was made in LionChief+. But the GP7 is the same size as the postwar version, as with some of the other LC+ diesels that have their origins with earlier postwar/MPC models.

Though you must be aware that even the postwar/MPC version GEEPS still tower above most traditional rolling stock. Because even those earlier versions are pretty close to scale in their overall dimensions, albeit if lacking in other details and accuracy.

What I find interesting is the new starter set Tier 4 diesel, which is listed with a 16 inch length in the latest catalog. I don't consider that a traditional size, even if it is smaller than scale. Even on 031 curves, there will be a lot of overhang. Unless of course, that number is also a typo.

Though many of the traditional locos are listed in Lionel catalogs as having a minimum 031 or 036 diameter curve, some of them will easily make 027 curves. One could suppose because 027 track isn't made anymore, that would be the reason. Although if they have lower fuel tanks than the postwar/MPC versions, that could cause problems with 027 switch box housing. Many traditional rolling stock items though, still have their minimum curve listed as 027.

Looks like it to me. Lion Chief + GP7 = 17.5. Says the same thing in the Lionel catalog.

Yep, that’s where I was getting the 17.5”.  My LHS doesn’t carry LC+, so I was shopping online at TW.  I did notice however that the description is very generic & geared towards the entire line of LC.  Things like frosted windows in a certain model, or no smoke/diesel sounds on the rectifiers.

Maybe 17.5” is the boxed size? Or perhaps the longest diesel in the LC+ range?00FBACFD-23A6-447D-922A-85C8A707958B

I have a GP-20 and how different can it be?  Indeed the box is 17.5 inches.

The GP-20 and the GP-9/7 use the same chassis. They are exactly the same length.

As noted above, it's the box that's 17.5 long. The engine itself is the 14 3/4.

The below text is from a Lionel catalog showing a LionChief Plus GP-9:

  • Product Length: 17.50"
  • Dimensions: Length: 14 ¾"
