Want to disassemble a couple of K-Line 21" cars in order to convert them to 2-rail and to paint the interiors. Can't see how to get the chassis separated from the body shell. Has anyone done this?
Having been quite some time since I worked on my K-Line 21" Empire State Express cars, as I recall the ends come off and the under frame/interior assembly slides out the end of the car. Check for screws on the bottom, that hold the ends in place.
That is correct. There are two screws on the bottom at each end that hold the plastic end cap in place. Remove the screws, slide off the end cap, and the chassis and body can be separated by sliding them carefully. Be sure to find and disconnect the wire for the overhead lighting. There will be a large connector at one end.
As I recall, I believe those last two answers are correct. You might have to remove the trucks by taking off the plate that holds them to the floor, in order to clear the skirting part of the car sides. And, I believe I had to apply a little pressure to separate the car sides in order for the floor to slide out easily.
