What a terrible mistake I made yesterday on the SELL forum   I don't know how I can apologize enough about it.

I was asked by a friend to help her sell a collection of Lionel cards, so I posted them on the SELL forum.  Either she didn't know what they were exactly, or possibly I misunderstood what she told me about them.  I posted them as cards ISSUED by Lionel in 1953 but as several forumites emailed me to tell me, they were actually 1997 issued.  Possibly they were supposed to represent stuff Lionel had in 1953, I don't know.

Either way, I put a post out there with completely false information.  There's no backing off of that mistake.  Thanks goodness that this forum has curtious, knowledgable, and helpful members: I got several emails this morning telling me of my mistake.  All were politely worded and non-accusatory, so THANK YOU to them for NOT posting that within the thread.  Luckily no one replied to it so I was able to remove it this morning.  Damage done though.

I don't think my widowed lady friend was trying to scam anyone.  I know her well and she would never do that.  What she told me was what she truly believed.  I am at fault for not trying to authenticate it though.  I did a GOOGLE search on 1953 Lionel Cards and only got a few hits, all for no more than 10 cards.  So I assumed (yeah, I know) that what I posted was correct.

I will ask her today if she wants for me to repost the collection with correct information (not sure what that is though) with an obviously greatly reduced selling price.

Over the many years that I've been on this forum I hope that I've established myself as a reliable and down-to-earth member that would never try to pull one over on you guys.  Still, I am ashamed this morning.

It’s all good Walt! That’s what the forum is for. Take care and go run some trains on the layout to let this drift off into the past like the smoke from your locomotive.....

Have a great weekend

Thanks, but this is going to take a LONG time for me to get over.  I feel, in a way, that any good vibes that I've established here over the many many years that I have been a member has all been lost.  It'll take a while to recover from that feeling.

I appreciate all of the above encouraging comments.  THANKS!

I saw the post too, but "knowing" you over the years (we may have met in person once or twice at York, but mostly seeing your posts here) , I realized you were not intentionally misrepresenting them.

You posted enough good photos, there were enough time-frame identifiable items shown, I doubt anyone would have really thought it was something from 1953.  The existence of Thomas the Tank, the Phantom engine, and the Steam Clean and Wheel Grind Shop accessory on some of the cards was enough to give an idea of when they were from.  While very small print, the copyright date was also showing clearly on the lower edge of the back of the cards.  Also, while probably only noticeable to those who have been in the card collecting hobby in the past, both the printing methods (crisp, clear, color on the back of the card) and the packaging (foil pack) for the unopened packs was something that didn't happen until the late 80's or early 90's.

If you had been a person trying to pull a scam, you would not have left all of those things in your post, so It was pretty clear it was just an honest mistake.

I have a framed set of these cards still attached to the printed perforations sheet.

They look just like the originals with the back printing that is on the reverse side.

So even these later versions are nice to have.

Alan, If your cards are the one's I'm thinking of. They were reprints of the 60's lionel cards. They were reprinted in 1996 by Joe Algozzini (TCA member)  w/the permission from Lionel, sold by Joe, purple hall York. There were only 1000 sets printed, description of each card is on the back and the production number is also on the back. A complete set still intact is very rare, especially do to the delicacy of the perforation. When Joe sold them back in 1996 purple hall York meet. A lot of the sets were separated by the purchaser.

I have a few of these sets still intact, also I have a proof sheet (1 of only 10) final production before perforation, signed and dated by Joe.

Walt, I only “know” you digitally. I also can easily see the sincerity in your mea culpa. I’m sure I’m like everyone else in saying this is absolutely a big zero as it relates to any concerns about your veracity. I would hate for you to worry about this to the point of not coming around as much. I’d miss your weekly Christmas photos!  As said above, no worries, our friend.

Before reading the rest of your post; I assumed you must have used the term “lash up”.  Now THAT would have been a genuinely terrible mistake!  😉

Seriously; you caught and corrected your error.  So far as I can see, no apology was necessary.

Walt - I urge you to not feel that way at all!  You made a mistake and did the right thing to correct! If anything, your reputation and standing has been ENHANCED not hurt!

Hopefully, over the coming weeks and months you will be able to get over the sorrow of your mistake. I am sure the curtious members here are a forgiving group and will someday be able to let bygones be bygones. Always remember"Lest he who has not sinned cast the first stone".
