Yikes, it's another Big Boy thread. Maybe a new world's record on these. It's Friday at least, and at last! Last Christmas season, on or around when I learned of the new Big Boy and it's state-of-the-art features, I asked Lionel's customer service if they'd consider making a Polar Railroad Big Boy, and if they would, I would commit to buying one. I recieved a response that they'd consider it, but nothing ever came of it. It might seem a silly request, but I am a fan of Lionel's Polar Express and Polar RR Lines, and quite frankly, I got caught up in the Big Boy advertising hype and had visions of a Polar Railroad Big Boy with that awesome sounding whistle pulling a long consist of PR freight cars in my head. In hindsight, I am breathing a sigh of relief, because spending $1,900 to $2,000 for a model train doesn't sit well with me, and, I am planning to get the new Polar Express Berkshire, which costs no small amount, either. If money were no object, I would buy a UP Big Boy and see if I could have it re-painted/lettered for the PR.

Out of curiosity, would anyone else have bought the Big Boy if had been in your fantasy paint scheme, or even just a black one with no name on the tender?

Allan,

I am shocked, shocked to find that you are still buying toy trains.  Why, I remember just a few short years ago when you were providing good sound, sage advice on how we could limit our toy train purchases by concentrating on detailing our layouts.  I'm only joshing of course.  I know all to well how much fun it is to buy toy trains.  Enjoy them all as I'm sure you will.

You have to be one of the biggest PE fans known to mankind! I admire you for your persistence with encouraging Lionel to do a run of PE Observation cars which I think you have a far better chance to getting made than a PE BB.

I am with Allen on this one. I simply do have the room or desire to make such a large locomotive fit just to run it for a while. The features are nice but not enough to moe me to purchase. The price is higher than most but if I wanted to sell several engines I could likely afford it. I am glad to see what Lionel has done but my preferences have changed. I really like the tinplate right now. Not enough to get rid of my Legacy stuff because both are different. I hope the hype translates into other offerings that take a smaller price and smaller diameter curves.

Of course a tinplate with whistle steam smoke, blow down steam smoke, and decreasing coal load would really get my interest and likely money......

Well I was thinking of the 765, but with teh AC12 out may have to look at that one and the BB.

Theres a good chance you might be able to get both, or should I say all three. If money permits.

Gregg,

if you were in HO, with a little looking, you would have a chance of finding one. AHM/IHC committed that Blasphemy years ago. Another crime that they committed was a GG1 in (all rivet counters please sit down) NYC Lightning Stripes. Low End HO has had it's own share of "Fantasy Schemes" those are not just limited to 3 Rail.

I have some fantasy scheme locomotives, Union Pacific never had any Hudsons or Berkshire, but those were popular classes with many RRs, and at least plausible. There are some lines that just shouldn't be crossed, such as the "Signature" locomotives mentioned above, or maybe D&H Cab-Forwards or a UP Dreyfus Hudson.

Lee did do a Wonderful job on that Union Pacific J class though, and it is your Railroad, so run what you like, just my opinion, which just like a certian part of the anatomy"Everyone has One"

Brief video included to show the depth of my commitment to the Polar Railroad line. Not included in the video are the PRR berk and the toy fair boxcar.

A Big Boy in PRR deco would look nice, as long as we're talking about the light blue/burgundy/black and not that garish red/green.

I don't buy anything that won't run on O36 (O27 preferred), so that would be the obstacle for me.

Gentlemen,

I am with Allan Miller on this one, I do not have the space or the funds to invest in this particular engine.  Engines must run on at least 036 for me to really be interested in running them, even my new Legacy Shay will have the extender draw bar installed on it, to accommodate the 036 curves in my layouts.
