I found; Three engines for the price of one

As a point of continuing education, there are no dashes in EMD model numbers. The locomotive under discussion here is a GP9, not GP-9.

You're right, I was waiting for that ax to fall.         In my own defense here's a picture of the Lionel box.

Looks like Lionel needs the tongue lashing about the proper use of dashes!

I had that set.  It's a beauty.  Program them in a lashup.  Those engines will pull quite a load, single motor is fine.  Have fun with it.

Program each unit, give it a number and direction, then make a lashup.  They sound great together.  At one time I had every TMCC GP7/9 Lionel made.  All great engines.  There were 3 triple lashup sets.  A Boston & Maine and a Wabash being the others.  I still have the Wabash set, one of the few O gauge models I still own.  It is my fav.  It is a Heritage series, which comes with, believe it or not, a lifetime guaranty.  Don't think yours does.  Great set.

Just curious but what about GP38-2 or SD40-2?

As I have explained here many times, the only place were EMD used dashes was in the"Dash 2" series of locomotives. The MODEL of the locomotive has no dash - SD40 - and the Series Designation is a "-2." So SD40-2, GP40-2, SD38-2, GP38-2, etc are all correct, with no dash in the MODEL name.
